History Channel's "Top Shot" on Sunday night

I like the show, except for the whinning about "It's not my fault, I'm used to a Glock" or "I'm a Ipsic grandmaster and I don't want to lose over bows and arrows". It's the overall topshot not the topshot in your own specialty, why else would they invite so many different types of shooters.

I'm glad Bill lost in the last episode, due to the fact he was acting like a jerk over a supposed slight by Kelly or maybe just the fact that Kelly's youth and skill are out shining his own.

First of all

Everyone who is hating on this show, you need to chill. Seriously, what is wrong with you? After reading several posts i feel like im on an ANTI-gun forum!! We should ALL be throwing a party to celebrate the fact that someone had the marbles to put something like this together for us to watch, instead of "Jersey Shore" or whatever utter crap is on. As many posters have already mentioned, the show is NOT geared toward "experts" and gun nuts like many of us on this forum because if it were, they would have alot LESS people watching it. History channel is in the business of making money, not appealing to one narrow crowd of people.

When i saw this show i was like "yes, this is what ive always wanted", because i usually dont watch much TV due to the crap that is usually on. I think we should all be very appreciative that somebody decided to put something like this into action. The show is a very positive step in the direction of gun-rights/awareness/education. Me and my buddies make it a point to get together and watch it on sunday. We own many of the weapons that have been used and that makes it even cooler.

SECOND..
I think it is just plain AWESOME that we have TWO guys from the show as members on this forum that we can converse with about the show!!!! (Ben and Brad) That really shows you how respected this forum is, because i have lurked around other gun-forums and NONE of them come close to THR.

Brad - Welcome to the high road. I am a glock man myself and i can def. understand some difficulties when switching from that platform to a single-action steelgun such as the 92fs. As for the elim. challenge, that looked REALLY tough. But you got through it so good job. I respect your shooting ability and hope we continue to see you on the show!!

PS. idk about other types of guns, but the kid def. knew what he was doing with that 700.

I personally like the show, and would like to see more such shooting shows.

Shows such as this, may/will draw more people to experience firearms. That is a good thing.

Brad, congrats on your performance with a crossbow. Good speed, good shooting, clean win. I know it's probably been a few months, but it is fresh to the viewers, so congrats on moving on to the next challenge.

I thought Kelly's joke was funny and not insensitive at all. I laughed and so did everyone in the house.

batjka, that's what I was thinking about the joke. Everyone else got it. She must really have been that bad for it to bother Bill like it did...

Kelly was the bigger man for stepping up to the plate to get the tension over with before the competition. Bill might have saved the Red team had his head been in the game, instead of on his own petty crap.

I like Top Shot, I just wish there was more shooting and far less sitting back at the house telling them how much they dislike the other person.

I wish Colby Donaldson would just shut his yap and go back to Survivor.

The show is pretty cool but I was expecting a show about reenacting famous shots. Instead it is no different than "American Idol" or "Real World" or "Survivor" or the other reality crap. Just with firearms.............I still watch it though........

I agree that Logan is right. These guys are members of THR and we don't bash our own. Not saying we always have to agree but the personal attacks are not very high road.

I would not rate Top Shot as my favorite show of all time by any menas. It however beats the heck out of the tenny bopper drama's that flood my tv. So if you don't like the show watch the Bachelor or some of those other fine fine programs on the tube.

Right on target, Logan.

There is no way, NO WAY, the History Channel (or anyone else) is going to do a show that goes into the detail that'll satisfy people here: They're in the business of making money, and a show with an audience that numbers in the dozens just doesn't sell enough ads to make it.

Ok, a show outside of MSNBC. :)

And as far as the drama, well, it sells. It's no secret that NASCAR got popular as a sport the minute they started playing up the personalities of each of the drivers. I wonder how many of the people complaining about Top Shot being "Survivor with guns" have a big ol' #3 pasted on the rear window of the vehicle?

Now imagine what would happen to the shooting sports if USPSA, IDPA, 3 Gun and High Power Rifle were half as popular as NASCAR ...

It boggles the mind.

I think that Episode 3 went a little bit better than Episode 2. As a couple of you have pointed out- I cringe as well when I hear the IPSC Grandmaster line. Especially since at the time of filming I was only a GM for like 4 months. (And still have a season ahead of me to prove I've earned it.) But you can't take it back, so there it is.

As per knowing what we were getting into in advance, we actually didn't know anything. I just heard that a show about shooting was being cast and that it would likely involve living in a house together. We were unaware of the format at any point until we got through Episode 1. I had actually assumed that it would be something like everyone shoots and the worst shooter that week goes home or similar.

As per Bill, I think he was portrayed a little harshly too. He's a very straightforward guy, and you know where you stand with him. He and Kelly didn't see eye to eye, but that comment was the apex. I think he might have viewed Kelly's apology as insincere, and that's why he reacted the way he did. We're all people too, and we don't just act out for crazy illogical reasons. There's always more to it, especially with stress involved. However to speak to the character of both Bill and Kelly, the latter will actually be on Bill's radio show on Thursday to chat. It appears they've made amends after the show- which I'm very happy to see.

Funny, as a chef and a shooter, I watch Top Chef and Top Shooter, without fail. I am disappointed to see the "Reality Show" junk move into the shooting sports. I argue just as badly when I see some TV "Chef" misuse his mise en place on TV.

I argue with my wife that I want to see every shot, not the "reality" garbage. (Well, I do too on the Chef shows, too.) Is it too much to ask to see every shot made?

However, we get to see shooting sports on TV. That is huge. Really. Real world Pros, real world Vets, Competitors, and regular people/neighbors/veterans that have BTDT.

My kids can make better shots than that...

Now if I just had a way to prove it...

First off: I LOVE this show!
So do my kids and everyone I know that I've conned into watching it...
It's a gun show on "mainstream" television and I just can't get enough!

However, I stand by my statement, if you are calling yourself an expert, don't piss and moan about the equipment.PERIOD!

Mike might be a helluva guy, but he simply choked when it came to making shots beyond 200 yards...

Sorry, but I was making 400 yard hits on milk jugs when I was 8 or 9 with my daddy's Savage 99 with a 3-9X Redfield on top and my brother was spotting with an old pair of 20X binoculars...

We recently acquired a Mosin Nagant and my older boys had no trouble at all popping soda cans and golf balls at 50-75 yards

I can and honestly will tell you that my six kids, ages 7 to 16 are better shooters than some of the people I've seen shoot on this show.

Whatever happened to diversity?

We shoot from .177 BB up to .44 magnum, .22 to 12 gauge. Pistol to rifle to shotgun. We often practice with bow and arrow, slingshot, thrown weapons and edged weapons. Heck, I even got one of those blowguns that we use from time to time.

I can say with a great degree of confidence that it wouldn't matter what weapon I'm handed, if I got a chance to take it for a spin with an expert by my side, that I could then use it with a high degree of proficiency during a competition.

I'm not trying to talk smack as it were, nor do any trophies cover my walls.
I'm no expert, was never in the military or police. I'm just an everyday guy who has learned to make use of any and all available weapons.

I very seldom stand at 20 feet and make one carefully aimed shot at a paper plate sized target, yet I know I could do better than some of these "top shots" So far we've seen trigger slaps and jerks that were so sloppy my 10 year old pointed them out...

I have already shown my kids the difference between "aimed shooting" and what I like to call "tactical shooting" where one must do a few pushups, a few jumping jacks, jog in place for 10 seconds and then immediately draw from a typical carry and engage mutiple targets or run through loading or safety drills.
Changes things drastically when you're heart is hammering away in your chest and your hands are all sweaty...

From everything I've seen and read, it ain't gonna get any prettier or any easier, and in the immortal words of Dale Sr.: "Second place is still first loser."

Watching the 3rd episode on Hulu right now. Are those Star Targets that they're using?

Edit: Just finished and now I want to try bow shooting haha. I like that they're covering different types of marksmanship in the show and look forward to seeing where it'll go in the next few weeks. The crossbow challenge looked fun and Brad had the 100% mental advantage in that he knew he needed to focus on mastering the reload more than he needed to stress over shooting a crossbow that was apparently already quite dialed in. I know Brad isn't everyone's favorite but his mental game is interesting to watch.

And not that television's predictable or anything, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the Blue team deals with an elimination vote next week. ;-)

Brad,

Nice to see you're a forum member! All I gotta say, despite the ugly comments, is that you are indeed a good shot... 'nuff said.

The thing about the show that gets to me is that it did somewhat get too into this whole "reality TV" thing that's been going on lately. This show would be much better had all that drama been set aside and it stuck strictly to shooting. For instance, I wish they would've never had a house for everyone to live in. Obvioulsy tensions are gonna rise especially on a competitive show (I think we've all seen atleast one show of Real World vs. Road Rules). And of course with the way that the competitors choose who they want gone it's just gonna lead to an unfair game. Like a popularity contest.

We've all seen how a lot of the guys on the show tend to not like Brad but at the same time they'll admit he is a good shot. Yet they vote he leave simply because they don't like him. C'mon, guys! This isn't a popularity contest. It's about who the "Top Shot" is. It's a good show but with this whole popularity contest going on they should've just name it "The Coolest Shot."

But nevertheless, still a good show. It's good to open up competitive shooting as a sport to everyone. Hopefully this can help turn the heads of those damn Antis and educate them on how firearms aren't just about crimes, as they tend to think.

It may be stating the obvious, but let's keep in mind that many of these people have a competition mindset and as such, are a little more tightly wrapped than most of us. They're all pretty narrowly focused on a particular skill-set, so it shouldn't surprise us that combat pistol shooters might be lousy with rifles or the rifleman with pistols, etc.

If I had to guess, I'd pick Andre or one of the other military types with a more generalized knowledge of firearms as the eventual winner. Those guys are also not handicapped by the sort of ego-driven mentality that leads to being unpopular and voted out.

A+ for the plate format and shooting through cardboard based on memory, this was by far the most entertaining of any offered to date.

Blue team's attitude concerning who gets bumped was refreshing and more mature than what we've seen so far.

I also liked this episode the best so far. Some pretty good shooting on an interesting format by the way.

I enjoy watching the show and it's cool to know we have a few of those guys here on THR. I agree with Logan, that we should all be thankful that something like this is even being aired on TV. I never would have thought we'd have a weapon shooting competition show on TV.

Good luck to the competitors

Agreed.

Refreshing as it may be, tho, the Blue Team's approach to elimination (benignly culling the weakest) may backfire. Eventually, just as on any 'Survivor' type reality show, the 'teams' by definition must be somehow disrupted, melded or dispensed with entirely to focus upon the individual's strength, not the group sinew.

If I can weather another half-dozen elimination rounds, it should again get interesting.

Just saw "topshot" last night for the first time. For the love of.....You have got to be kidding. The moderater is an "ego" on legs. They may be some of the best shots, but, The drama...I can do better with a long bow then they did and I haven't picked up my long bow in over 40 years (doubt if I can even find it)...I'll NOT waste my time again.:scrutiny:
