HK USP .40c Your thoughts....

I've had one since 96' and I love it. The only draw back for me is that the little spring retaining ring tends to go MIA when shooting P+ loads. You don't need it to operate reliably, but it makes disassembly a little easier, so it's no big deal really. Very reliable, it will eat almost any ammo, but it doesn't group all ammo to my satisfaction. Most accurate production ammo I found was Magtech 180gr FMJ for practice and the 155gr Starfire JHP for HD. Those rounds produce some very impressive groups for a Compact handgun. If you reload you can get even better groups with the 135gr Nosler Competition handgun bullets with 8gr of Power Pistol powder at max OAL and 1300fps!

Many will say the design has been eclipsed by the later releases from H&K. I've had mine since the first year there were available. I have had exactly zero failures that we not reloaded ammo related. So asided from some poor reloads, this pistol has been flawless with everything I've sent through it.

It is a reasonable size, the controls are easy to manipulate, the gun points well for me and just as importantly for my wife--who now says this is her's.

Overall I think it is a very good design and though it is now being updated somewhat by H&K in the form of the p2000 and p30, if you can find one at a good price I think it is still a fantastic pistol.

I had a .45F for a few years. I'm not much on the .40, but the .45 was a real tack driver. Very rugged and boringly reliable. There were only 2 drawbacks for me. One, that thing was huge. It wasn't the easiest to conceal (if that matters to you). The .40C would be smaller, but the USP compacts are usually about the size of most fullsize guns. Two, the grip angle was wrong for me. I either needed to go w/just the USP or keep my other guns, and I wasn't about to give up my CZ.

I guess there is one other thing, the rails on the USP are only used on the USP, so you can't get any light you want w/out an adapter. Don't know if that matters to you, but it's something to think about.

It's what I normally carry, and have for 8 years. I've never had any problems with it at all--none. It is utterly reliable, tough, and I suppose it does a good job at taming the reportedly fearful .40 recoil, because I don't even notice it. Mine's DA/SA, but you can have an LEM trigger installed if you like.

My thoughts on the USPc .40: I like it :D ....

... really there is so much to say, what are you interested in about the USP compact?
Are you going to carry it?
Are you comparing it to another gun?
What will use it for?

USP

Im looking to use it as my #1 gun. Im not interested in collecting or owning 10 handguns. Im looking at owning one GREAT gun. and maybe 1 .380 for ankle concealed carry (or wife to use when she wants). I would like to carry the USP concealed alot but mostly target and fun shooting.

i just picked up a H&K USP compact .45. It is a tank. Even though it is smaller than the USP, it is not small. The .45 barks hard without the recoil reduction system on the full size, but the compact is small enough to be an everyday CCW piece. A lifetime weapon that you can count on.

I love my USP 40, if you take the plunge and don't like it then PM me and I'll buy it

8+ years on my hip and 10k+ plus rounds. wouldn't trade it. i've broken a couple retaining clips like Birdbustr and had 3 ammo-caused failures to feed. its a very well made, accurate and intuitive gun to use. i think they are worth the premium price.

the downside is, i've run across some pretty good deals on other pistols and turned all but one down. i think about it for a minute and realize that they don't do anything that my HK doesn't do so i just can't justify spending the extra money on another. its detrimental to the size of my collection. good for the wallet though, i suppose.

Mine will never go away as well. I bought it used with night sites and have yet to have a problem with it after firing 1000's of rounds through it over the last year. I carry this mainly in the winter and the woods.

My p2000sk is my light clothing carry gun IWB.

It's an okay gun IMO.

I've had mine for about six years, but don't really carry it much anymore. It's light, but a little thick for IWB carry. The grip is not as comfortable as some other pistols and the trigger is a little mushy. It has never malfunctioned.

I wouldn't recommend it as a "first" gun, but for someone with experience it is a perfectly good firearm for personal defense.

Although I'm a bonafide Glock man, I got no problems with Hk or even sig. I own a 1911, but I don't find it worthy of carry duty. I like Glocks, I just can't help it!

Mines a compact in .45 and its a keeper.
To fat to carry (for me) but a nice pistol anyway.
Like:
reliability
workmanship
finish (not pretty but durable)
accuracy
feel of grip AFTER you put a houge wrap on it.

(minor) dislikes:
double action pull and effort to correct
cost of mags
very difficult to take down the bottom end
hassles with warranty/ hk armorer BS
difficulity obtaining oem parts
sharp edge at front of ejection port in slide (hangs on holsters)
