I am looking at the HK USP45 line of pistols, but am a little bit confused on which variant is right for me. Does HK make the USP45 without a manual safety? I like how the Glocks have only passive safeties, but I think that HK quality is better than Glocks. Thanks.

Go to the HK company website - as I recall there is a chart (somewhere) which shows all the variants and how they work. There IS a variant without a manual safety - two in fact (I think); one a DS and the other an LEM setup. There may be others. And of course there's the variant 2 - which is DS/SS with a decocker (again, I think)

Variant 2 is the left handed version of Variant 1, which is DA/SA, and yes, the control lever will act as both thumb safety and decocker. On V1, the lever is on the left side, on V2 the lever is on the right. The DAO model (with the original DA trigger) is Variant 7. Then there is the LEM model that has the lighter DA pull.

You want the LEM. The original DA trigger is l-o-n-g and heavy. Not as bad as a Sigma, but not good.

no safety for right-hander would be:
Variant 3 (double action/single action, decocking lever, but no safety)
Variant 7 (double action only, no control lever)
LEM - my favorite for carry

Try the LEM before you buy tho... there's nothing else like it that I know of. It's like a 1lb initial state, long distance pull. Then it feels like any 7lb? SA trigger pull. I consider the initial, long pull a "safety distance"

Go with the new HK45. I have one and it is excellent in every respect and has an extremely comfortable customizeable grip. Of all my 45ACP pistols, it is my favorite.

I think the ergonomics are definitely a step up from the USP, although I don't find the USP uncomfortable either.

"giggity", what is the intended purpose of the pistol?
If it is for CCW, you are barking up the wrong tree with either of these IMO (the USP45 or HK45). They are both rather large pistols. Too large to carry comfortably IMHO. If you want to carry, I would recommend looking at the compact versions of either of these, or also the P2000SK if you don't mind a different caliber. Just something to consider.

LEM (Law Enforcement Modification) Trigger
Developed especially for the U.S. government, the Law Enforcement Modification (or LEM for short), is a USP DAO (Double-Action Only) model with a unique trigger mechanism. This mechanism improves the double action trigger performance and reduces the weight of the DAO trigger pull to 7.5-8.5 pounds, utilizes a stronger hammer spring, and shortens the trigger reset. Aside from the LEM mechanism, it is identical to the USP Variant 7 (DAO) model.

The HK45 will cost you more than .45 USP, what you will gain are some cosmetic differences, the changeable backstrap, and the O-ring. If those differences are worth the premium, then go for it.

Having owned both, I could go either way but the accessories for the USP are more plentiful. Night sight options are currently limited in the HK45 series while the USP series are abundant.

Also keep in mind that the HK45 is a 10 round gun while the USP is a 12 round gun if that matters to you. As Jason_G said, if you plan on concealed carry, take a look at the compact models instead of the full size.

Lastly, these are great guns, and a step up from the Glocks. However, there are trade-offs but that's a different discussion in and of itself.

The HK45 is, by far, the finest overall 45 I've ever owned, handled, and/or shot. The USP45 Tactical guards my home because of its greater capacity. Both are amazing weapons. VERY soft shooting, accurate, and reliable. Good luck and happy shooting!

I own three USP pistols.

Utterly reliable and incredibly accurate. The best sem auto pistols I own....well except for my Sig P226.....and Sig P229.....decisions decisions.

I own a H&K usp 40 compact with the LEM trigger. I just ordered an HK-45 after much thought, varient 1. I had considered another 1911 but went with the H&K DA/SA trigger.

How does the LEM trigger compare to the triggers on Glocks? Also, I have experienced the DAO trigger on a Beretta 96D Brigadier. How does it compare to that. I like Glock triggers, but the Beretta trigger pull is too heavy for my liking.

I had a P2000 with LEM trigger and I HATED it. It's hard to describe why, but I didn't seem to have any control over that trigger, especially during rapid fire. It was really weird to me and I couldn't get used to it. Nothing like a Glock trigger or DAO Beretta trigger.

However, my favorite home defense and winter carry gun is the USP .45 Compact DA/SA with safety.

I agree. The grip on the HK45 is a lot more ergonomic than the regular 45 USP
