Quick question,

lets say i want to reload 308 using Hodgdon Superformance that i know works well in 6.5 Creedmoor, why there’s no data to be found for this combo?

this is what the data says about 6.5 Creedmoor

This is what i want i think for 308

barrel length 24"
150gr BTHP
starting load 41.0 grains of Superformance

- if it can push a 150gr 6.5mm bullet, it should push a 150gr 308 bullet out of the same barrel length with a little less pressure since the bore is bigger

what you guys think?

I have never used that powder but I thought it was a 4350 type burn rate and was used in 270/30 06. A 150 in 6.5 is heavy for caliber nominal being 140ish while a 150 in a 308 is light. If I was trying to do a crossover load I would be searching out a common case like 243 or 7mm08 for loads.

I took a look in my copy of the Hornady Manual for Cartridge Reloading 10th Edition. There's no load data for .308 Winchester using Superformance powder for any projectile weight listed, which ranges from 110 grains to 220 grains (Hornady projectiles only of course).

There is load data using Superformance powder for 30-06 Springfield for projectiles ranging from 150 grains to 220 grains.

However, there's no Superformance load data for 25-06 Remington for example so it isn't consistent across cartridge "family" for either the 30-06 family or the .308 Winchester family, as there is Superformance load data for .243 Winchester as an example.

Hodgdon has some verbiage about the limited suitable applications for Superformance powder sold at the retail level.

I found the same thing for 7mm08. No data for superformance. I did some internet searching and found some have tried it, but didn't get complete burns or very sooty and poor accuracy results. Hope you can make it work for you.

I also thought that superformance was in the 4831 burn range, but I could be mistaken.

Contact Sierra ( if it the bullet mfg your using) and Hodgdon's and ask if they have any data for your combo. Some times the bullet mfg has data that's not published they will send you.

It is but my point was being that it's out of the good area of the burn rate chart for 223 and 308. Trying to make a powder that is too slow work will result in very low speeds and a dirty burn.

There are probably more powders that give excellent results with 308 than just about any other cartridge. Superformance, however isn't one of them. If you were trying to load 200 gr or heavier in 308 then you might come up with a usable load. But even then I'm betting you could do better. For typical 150-180 gr 308 loads it isn't a good choice.

It also is wise to consider what you will be shooting it in. I bought a box of Hornady Superformance ammos for my M1a... that was a really dumb idea. I would not use Superformance ammos or powder in any gas gun.
