Well, I think its about time for me to take my first hunting trip and the idea of hog hunting definitely has my attention.

I was looking around earlier and found out about TPWD public land units. I dont really want my first hunt to be a canned, 100% you will kill something deal...and this seems like a really good idea from what I've heard...

Anyone have any experience hog hunting in Texas on a TPWD holding? Any recommendations on which one? I'm in Houston, but it seems like the Dallas-area holdings are best...anything within a few hours isnt a problem. Helpful suggestions for a novice hunter and the like are also welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks again,

Kenneth

I've been looking at the areas in the TPW type two map book and the best LOOKIN' area to me is the area on the north end of Toledo Bend. I wanna make it up there some time to do some camping and hunting. They changed the rules from last year, though, used to be a year round deal, no longer.

I noticed that...I thought hog hunting was always year round, but apparently the season ends March 15th at the latest now...still oughta give me enough time to head out there and mess around.

Im gonna call TPWD Monday and see if they have any advice...Ill post what I hear.

There is no hog season, just that on the type two areas, TP and W sets their own rules and regs for each hunting area for management purposes. Last year on that area on Toledo Bend, they had it year round, but shotguns, archery, or black powder only. I was kinda planning a spring trip up there, then they up and changed the rules to end things March 15. Oh, well, it's 7 hours from me, so I'd probably not find the time anyway.

I've not been, but heard good things about finding lotsa hog in Old Sabine River Bottom. Check book for season because, yeah, lots of 'em do close in March when the campers start coming back and fishermen go to to working the creeks for sandbass.

But heck, at Ray Roberts, the "hog season" does not open until Jan. 15 - after the duck hunters are done? It runs through August 31 (archery only).

Ken, being in east Texas, you may want to know about a pending shindig over in your parts. It's been put on hold for a while due to Ranger+P+'s buddy's funeral and such, but ya might want to check out "Hog Wild" thread in CHL section (of all places) at www.texaschlforum.com.

Checked it out, and definitely look awesome. I've been using this trip as an excuse to buy a new rifle, and damned if the price isnt rising by the day...first I found a bubbaed out SKS in the rifles marketplace for $165...was a little too late for it. Then I realized how nice Marlin 336's were, and figured a hundred or two more wouldnt be such a big deal...and now an AR hunt...

I'll definitely check out Old Sabine River Bottom, and Ill be sure to ask about it when I talk to the ranger folk tomorrow.

Can anyone post a map link to the "old sabine river bottom" area we are talking about here?

Greybeard...I am still after some piggies you see...

Well, as an update I found out that a friend of a friend has some land down in the Needville area that she's willing to let me use...apparently alot of the local guys go down there to hunt and have been very successful in the past.

In lieu of another topic, anyone have any experience hog hunting with a mosin? Ammo recommendations?
