Hog Hunting

I have had nothing but good experience using my 6.8 spc, has the same recoil as my 5.56 but stops hogs as well as my .270...

plus you get to build a AR15 to hunt with, lots of fun... If you already have a 5.56 lower all you have to do is order a 6.8 upper.

We used to dunk them in hot water and then scrape the hair off before they torched them. But yeah, it still stunk.

I think that'd be really tough to do to a feral hog. They have a lot more hair, course, stiff, long hair. I just skin 'em. When I took an animal science course in college (as an elective for grins) I got to see how the slaughter house does it, walk 'em up on a platform, touch the "stun gun" (.22 short) to their forehead, they fall immediately into a vat of 5 percent lye (KOH) solution and these beaters on big rollers flip 'em over and over for 10 minutes or so and it knocks every hair off 'em. They're quartered up inside 15 minutes of the class period. :D Very efficient.

Hogs will die like any other animal unless they are pumped and ornery.....then they would rather chase you then grunge for corn in the dirt. Most will run unless you stand there and shoot them....then they can face off and charge or if you have dogs and they see you....you are the easy target and they are not stupid. Big hogs get big by staying away from gators and panthers whom are very sneaky down here in the swamps. Close shooting, sxs 12 ga slug and 000 buck... open prairie then any good deer rifle can put them down.

East Texas Hogs...

They are easy to kill, calibers that I know have put them down by folks I hunt with are .243, 6.5 Swede, .270 Win., 7x 57, .30-06 and a 45-70.
Oh, and 00 Buck.

Local farmers love to let us come hunt the marshes and creeks around their property.

Several guys in town trap them, feed them for a couple of weeks and then sell them for the meat.

I have only had to shoot one the second time, he was running and I missed the heart...hit too far back...what a mess. I trailed him, 200 lb boar, to an small island and he got up and charged me. Mr. Smith and Wesson put him down.

They really look a lot more menacing when they are aimed at your legs and doing about 30 mph. That's when you're glad you practice a lot. LOL

Well more practice will be needed and done before the first time I headout. I do not plan on becoming some sort of statistic hahahaha. Thanks for all the great input everyone. It looks like I will be trying out my Saiga 7.62x39 or my Mosin. From what you all have said either will work just fine. The S&W will be there for back up if I can't do my part as well :)

Anyone on here live in the Louisville area of KY? Or anywhere within 2-3 hours of it? How is the hunting out there? I'm trying to get a feel for it since that seems to be what I'm going to be doing most weekends while I'm out there.

Thanks again!
