So I was out Saturday morning in Hollenbeck Canyon calling some coyotes. I am on call so could not venture to far from town. I was resting on a ridge with my buddy and his camera looking over a valley when this herd of deer jumped us from over the ridge

They were 80 yards out and I have a deer tag. Unfortunately this is a shotgun only area and you are not allowed to hunt deer there.

Here is them going down to the Valley and up the hill on the other side. I managed to get with in 300 yards to them again before they spooked and took off down the other side.

I wonder what they were doing in Hollenbeck?

Is there water there this year? It does look like the grass is recovering from the fires.

How's the quail population doing around there now?

Also, I never understood the coyote or deer regs there. You can shoot coyotes but not deer? Or is buckshot not legal for deer outside LA County?

It has recovered beautifully. There is water there year round. I think the deer are there because every other public land in the county is being hunted for deer this time of year. I hiked up the hill where I last saw them and there is lots of sign so they may live there year round. But its the first time I seen them. I see sign of them all over but not like I did on top of that hill.

Have not seen any quail yet out there, but the doves are think! heading out Saturday morning to get some. :)

Did they ever restore the guzzler pump that was burned? That was a dove magnet.

Serious question, though. Why can you hunt coyotes there, but not deer?

The regs I've seen say "small game and birds". Do coyotes qualify as small game?

Those are some nice deer, by SD County standards especially.

I dont know why. You cant even hunt coyotes all year there. Only Sept 1 through March 1.

You can hunt in season

Dove, Quail, Turkey, Crow, Rabbit and Coyote. I have seen Bob cat scat out there as well, but cant hunt the kitties.:scrutiny:

They never restored the pump. But there is enough water to keep the doves there in thick numbers.

For a while, that was the only water around. When the tub went dry, there was nothing around.

Enjoy Dove Season II.:)
