Hollywood Hypocrite: Karl Urban as Judge Dredd

If I had a political litmus test for entertainers I'd be doodling on the wall, listening to myself whistle for amusement...but I like movies, music and books.

Posted from my busted old G2 on T-mobile's sorry network.

They're actors, for God's sake ... If you can't divorce yourselves from what these nitwits say offscreen, does this mean you believe everything you see on the screen?

Why should one flippin' care what an actor thinks, so long as he/she can realistically portray safe and professional use of firearms on the screen ...

i remember when Eastwood ran for mayor of Carmel. I said to my dad; "I dunno. I have heard him say some NASTY things in his movies." My dad told me that I had to separate actors' roles from their real lives. They play the roles they are given, that's their job. It doesn't mean that's who they are.

Actors act for a living.....what a surprise! ;)
Is Karl Urban a hypocrite because he plays a Judge in 'Dredd 3D', but fails to ride around on a motorcycle every day whacking bad guys right and left?
Reality check; he's an actor. He gets paid to play a role. What he does and thinks after work is over is his own business, just like what you do and think after work is your own business.

As for Anthony Hopkins?
He raced slot cars in 'Spotswood' (The Efficiency Expert), but I don't expect him to be a slot car racer in real life. But as far as I'm concerned, since he starred in the movie with the longest filmed slot race, he can snack on people all he wants. :)
Russell Crowe was also in Spotswood. He played a real jerk in the movie. I don't expect him to be a real jerk in real life. No wait, bad example, he is a jerk in real life.

Well, sometimes everything just works out.

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s column about Hollywood’s evolving take on gun rights, comes the tale of yet another star who profits greatly from glorifying guns in film while apparently embracing gun control for all us ordinary mortals.

The star in this case is New Zealand born actor Karl Urban. He is best known for two roles, Bones on the 2009 Star Trek reboot and Russian Secret Service assassin Kirill in The Bourne Supremacy. And on September 21, he will return to the big screen with his biggest role yet as Judge Dredd in a much-touted 3D reboot of the popular and gritty comic book franchise.

As you may recall, the last big screen appearance of Judge Dredd featured rabid anti-gunner Sylvester Stallone.

Welcome to Corporate America............

I always thought Judge Dredd was a parody of Americans' thirst for idiotic vigilante justice and childish individualism ironically personified in an agent of the authoritarian state.

I guess maybe some people aren't in on the joke?

I know ... I just hate the thought of paying money to someone who disagrees with one of my most important issues.

Then never go to another paid movie. The actor isn't a hypocrit. He is an actor. Not every actor plays roles that reflect who they are in real life. That is why it is called acting.

They play the roles they are given, that's their job. It doesn't mean that's who they are.

Yes, and if he plays his role properly and his personal sentiments tha contradict those of the character do not come out, then he is a pretty good actor.

Opinions don't really bother me. OK, sometimes they do, but they don't really matter.

It would be different if the actor said "I hate guns, and everything I make from this movie is being donated to Sarah Brady". Then I would see a reason to boycott them.

As others mentioned, if the film itself has an anti-gun message, I'm not seeing it either.

I do refuse to put money (no matter how little) into the pockets of celebrities who aid and abet our enemies however, i.e. Jane Fonda in N Vietnam, Sean Penn and Danny Glover supporting Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, etc.
