Hi Folks,

Can anyone recommend some good sources for holster making supplies? I'm familiar with traditional leather craft stores (such as Tandy), which carry most of the equipment and supplies needed to construct a holster.

However, I'm looking for sources for holster-specific hardware,l such as thumb break snaps (such as the kind used on holsters with retention straps on them)

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

If you're looking for the snaps themselves, you can get those from Tandy, The Leather Factory, Hide Crafter Leather - you want the Line 20 snaps. Some folks use Pull The Dot snaps. You can find them here:

If you're looking for the metal stiffner piece, you can get those from JRM products. Their phone number is 732-203-0200. (They're located there in NY state.)

Feel free to contact me if you need help finding other things.

Thanks folks for the information.

I'm thinking about making a field holster for my 696 and would like to put a retention strap on it. I appreciate the help.

For holster quality leather that is reasonably priced, check out zackwhite.com. Look at the premium double shoulder in 7-8 ounce. It is gum backed which makes the flesh side fairly smooth. Their leather comes from WesTan. Very dense leather, makes a fine looking holster.

For dyes look for Angelus dye. You can find it for a good price at turtlefeathers.com. You will also find the acrylic finish there as well.

For more information on holster making a lot of questions have been asked and answered on pistolsmith.com in the holster section of the forum by Alessi, Brommeland, Larsen, Bulman and others.

For a break you can use most any good quality snap...... Dot fasteners makes good stuff......look for solid brass.

Another company to get the stainless pc for the break is through CDL springs in California.......top notch guys.....

Hell, email me and Ill send you a SS pc for it.....I just remembered Ive got a bunch of them.

You'll need a good brass rivet.....I like the double caps myself.

I prefer plated rivets and snaps myself.

Unplated brass will react with the leather and start growing green verdigris out from under them in no time flat.

Plating is the only known cure for it.
