Holster Question

Have a question on holsters. For general range use and some other things I have a Blackhawk Serpa holster for my 1911. I like it a lot, but it doesn't conceal super well for me. Bottom of the muzzle will hang out under most of my shirts, even a number of my jackets etc.

So simple solution is get a IWB holster. Which I did get a plain Bianchi IWB holster. Last few times I've had the gun in there, when I was removing it, I noticed the safety was switched off. Which is a (minor) problem since when I carry, I am loaded. (Yeah, keep the finger off the trigger and the gun won't go off, but I still don't like that.) Anyway, I am convinced it is a problem with the holster and not the gun. I have a positive detent on the safety. I just think that the the whole gun/holster is moving around a bit as I am moving around and switching the safety. So for now that holster is occupying drawer space.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I carry in a Sparks VM2 and have never had the safety swiped off.

My safety has never been disengaged by the holster. I have a Colt with the standard "tear drop" thumb safety. It is very secure.

My holsters are a Raven Concealment Phantom, High Noon Slide Guard (both with sweat shield/slide guard/flab tap), El Paso Saddlery High Slide (no sweat shield).

Try a Kholster or a Cross Bred. I have both and no problems.

I carry 1911s most of the time. To me a good leather holster can't be beat - such as TT Gun Leather, Tauris, MR, etc. You desire a good 'full coverage' IWB holster that will not snag the front sight in an emergency situation and that is built correctly (sweat guard normally helps, etc.) not to disengage the safety, etc.

I have a basket full of holsters that I don't use since I bought a Cross Breed Super Tuck for my 1911. It does everything well... just buy your pants a size larger.

Thanks. Am familiar with most of the recommended holsters. Was just curious if anyone had ever had a similar problem. Still debating on what holster I want to go with. Supertuck, CUDA, and the Raven Concealment Phantom.

Does that model holster have a safety strap? That may be the culprit -- many safety straps have the snap located where they can disengage the safety. If that's the case, do away with the strap.

Next, does leather touch the safety lever? If so, soak the holster in warm water and put the safety lever in the "safe" position. Mould the leather around around the safety lever with finger pressure and a toothbrush handle. Let it dry.

After it dries you can add more insurance by sewing a leather cam to the holster, the top of the cam aligned with the mark made by the safety lever. Done properly, you should be able to take an unloaded gun, cocked and unlocked, shove it into the holster and the cam should force the lever into the "safe" position.

I have a Colt 1911 that had an ambidextrous safety that kept getting swiped off. Discovered that it was being swiped off from the off side. Replaced it with an extended safety on the inside only and the problem went away.

Nope. No Ambi-safety installed. It's a stock GI style. Only difference is I had a beaver tail put in awhile ago because I was getting bit by the hammer.

I'll have to try the leather molding, didn't think about that. There is no strap. Just a plain open top. The leather does come up past the safety. Covers the whole slide area. I can see a tiny bit of wear on that area on the leather.

Mold it and add a tiny leather can, and I guarantee it will cure the problem.

Is it the Pistol Pocket model? I used to have one for my 1911's and had the same problem when I carried my Kimber Ultra. I know that it is just one of many safety features but I want a gun to be in the same condition at presentation as it was when holstered so it went bye bye.
