A couple of months ago I finally got my concealed permit here in WA. Then a couple of weeks ago I finally picked up a carry pistol. Now I'm having a tough time finding a proper holster. I've seen off-the-shelf options but I'd rather not get them because I've learned the hard way that you buy nice or buy twice.

After surfing different custom holster makers for an IWB 1911 holster, I've realized that they're all backordered by 5-12 months or even more. You probably know them, Milt Sparks, Brigade, etc. I finally got on the waiting list for a Milt Sparks VMII but it will be 5 months. It ocurred to me that there's waaay more demand than there is supply for these items.

I'm curious what your experience has been with locating well-constructed holsters.

Check out High Noon Holsters:

http://www.highnoonholsters.com

They make good quality holsters and have a great return policy; wear it for 30 days and if you don't like it, send it back for a refund or replacement. They are great people to work with!

Personally I carry a Kahr CW9 in a High Noon IWB holster, and I love it!

I usually use injection molded holsters not leather. Mostly paddle holsters if I'm wearing a coat. IWB if just a shirt.
I live them better because they seem to last longer.
I prefer i-Tac or Comp-Tac

You missed an option on the poll
"Custom holster has arrived, CCW permit has not"

I'll plug crossbreed holsters for a suggestion - I got my holster in 12 calendar days.

I already posted about the holster HERE and HERE on THR.

I have three holsters.

Two are military surplus, one is a generic nylon.

I have no idea where any of them came from.

I currently own 3 Milt Sparks holsters and have another on order. After wearing a Sparks holster, off-the-shelf just won't cut it.

seems 'make own' deserves a option in the poll.
as so many of us at thr reload, i am not suprised we also make/modify holsters also.

Well if I can figure out how to add another option to the poll I would put "make my own" as an option. Anybody know how to do that?

This begs the question, How do you define "custom"?

Is made-to-order custom? or specifically fitted for you from a stock unit?

It annoys me to no end when retailers call things "custom" that are not...Meriam-Webster defines the adjective "custom" as "made or performed according to personal order"

...the ammunition Cabela's market's as "custom" is not made specifically for your gun; ie headspace, etc, as i think of a custom bullet.

So for holsters, if it is a stock-design, but the company doesn't keep an inventory, and makes the product when the order is placed (as i'm sure some companies do) is it "custom"?

I order Custom Kydex holsters all the time. In fact I am waiting for one right now. But there is no custom kydex option, it specifies leather.

As far as what is exactly custom, in my case it is, because the holster is being made to my exact light, and gun combination.

Fortunately, I use a High Noon Split Decision holster for the Walther PPK/S, and its always in stock. It's a great holster (fits perfectly, holds up to daily carry use, etc.), and you can get one in a few days for about $35 with shipping, in the event that you want to give it a try or pick up a spare.

Eric at HBE makes some real nice stuff. Dunno what his wait times are these days however (two weeks would be phenomenal! I know at one time his lead time was out to 12 months ... hell, he posts here just ask him. He posts more over on the DefensiveCarry forums though).

Another good holster maker is Ugly Bald Guy. His holsters are almost as nice as Eric's but less expensive and faster turnaround.

I recently bought a holster from another Eric at Side Guard holsters Even better price and faster turn around.

Check out Top Gun Supply. They get them in fairly often, and if they are out, they will email you once they come in if you sign up. I've ordered three VMII's from them, and didnt wait more than a couple of weeks for the two I did have to wait for.

If your gun is a shorty, they have one in stock now.
