where is a good place to look for holsters? I'm going to be carrying quite a bit, so i want a nice one, that's comfortable and wont get in the way of me working. i'm going to be going with a sig 226, and i'm fairly positive i'm going to carry on the hip, but still considering something like an under arm type holster.

is there anywhere on the internet that carry's quality holsters, or am i going to want to try them on before i buy?

Quality holsters are going to have to be custom-made by one of the holster makers recommended above. What this means is that you will need to order and wait for arrival. I seriously recommend you get a matching belt (or 2) while you're at it. You will probably need to buy used if you want to get one immediately since most holsters are made-to-order.

If you want something you can try on, either try a friend's, or you will have to go with a mass-market holster such as Galco or Fobus. These aren't nearly as nice (and the Fobus isn't real kydex).

quite the selection available, i like :)

question though, some sites have a feature to search for holsters for a specific gun. i'm attempting to search for holsters for a sig 226, and its asking just plain 226, 226 with rail, and 226 with rail bobbed hammer. i have no idea what the rail or bobbed hammer is referring to?

Heh. I opened this thread to give you a link to http://www.alumbankweb.com/cc-riglinks.htm, which is the single most comprehensive list of holster makers I know of on the web.

But it looks as though P&R is doing his best to compete with that list! :D

(Oh, lemme add a shameless shill too. Here's a link to a page which explains some common holster terminology, which might make wading through all the pages above a little more understandable, if you're new at this -- http://www.corneredcat.com/Holster/holster.aspx )

A rail is a feature located on the dust cover of a pistol. The dust cover is forward of the trigger guard, under the recoil spring and barrel. If you go to www.glock.com, look at the Glock 26. The dust cover is smooth and rounded. Then look at a Glock 17 or 19. Notice how those are squared off and have slots? The rail is used for mounting lights and lasers. Rails change the shape of a pistol and thus often require a slightly different holster.

Bobbed hammer refers to the hammer on the back of the gun. Shouldn't matter unless you're choosing a holster with a thumb break or similar retention strap.

i just talked to my college buddy who's in the law enforcement program, and he told me that in minnesota we're not allowed to carry while driving. so i'd have to take it off every time i got into a vehicle and drove. for this reason, i guess i'm going to need to find a clip on type rather than a belt loop type holster.

how comfortable/uncomfortable are the inside the waistband holsters?

but I assume that means the gun only. Get a holster you like/want and remove the gun when driving and place it where legal (glove box, gun rug, lock box, etc.)
Just a thought to keep your holster options as wide as possible.

A Fellow Minnesotan

First, go here and sign up - it's the Minnesota Carry Forum where you can find pertinent, accurate, and good advice about carrying in Minnesota.

http://www.twincitiescarry.com/forum/

I'm lance22 over there, and I live in MN.

When you carry, it is YOUR responsibility to know the law regarding carry. It is not a long law and there isn't much to memorize. The full text of the law along with other matrials can be found as "sticky's" on the Minnesota forum.

As you have found out, LEO's sometimes are grossly mistaken about the law regarding carry. You heard that we cannot carry while driving? :banghead: Sometimes LEO's think we can't carry openly, or we can't carry more than one firearm, we can't carry in State Parks, [insert any lame "you can't carry" reason here ]. LEO's don't need a permit to carry so there isn't much reason for them to be legal scholars in that area ... and maybe they read the Red Star or recieve Brady materials and those sources deliberately lie about carry laws as a matter of course.

I happen to like the MN carry laws VERY much ... I wish I only needed the second amendment to carry, as was the case once in this country, but other than that the MN laws are ok ...
