So for as long as I can remember after seeing them in my grandfather’s gun bibles and reading about them in the old safari and hunting books he’d give me to read, I’ve always wanted a Mannlicher Schoenauer. Something about that full length stock, butter knife bolt handle and reputation for a smooth action just had me. They Always have been at the top of my “Holy Grail” list.

Well this weekend I went to an auction in my area because they had some reloading stuff I was interested in. As I walked the tables one rifle caught my eye. Butter knife handle and full stock! But something was wrong. The bolt handle wasn’t in the right place and it had CZ and BRNO marks? For the next five minutes I furiously google fu’d and when it came up on the block I had a slight idea what it was. Nobody else even seemed interested when the bidding started, so now I get to add a 1st Cousin of my “Holy Grail”, to the stable.

So correct me if I’m wrong but I believe to now have a: CZ BRNO, Model 22F, Set Two Trigger, 7x57 Mauser made in 1947.

These were built on commercial 98 actions. That explains the bolt handle being rearward and having a full backstrap on the action. The front sight ramp has serrations to cut glare. The rear sight has two leafs. The original marked 100 and the flip up one marked 200. They are pretty close with 145gr. factory ammo.

The safety sits on the left of the bolt sleeve and flips up to lock the cocking piece and firing pin. The action can be operated with the safety on. It has an internal box magazine that holds 5 rounds. The set trigger has a long heavy pull to set, but once it sets the front trigger is set to 20oz. Without setting, the front trigger is a long, squishy 10+ lbs. The triggers appear adjustable but I’m not going to mess with them outside of cleaning them up. The sling mounts are nice and the metal tip on the stock is well done. There are no drill and tap holes for a scope and it is going to stay that way. I still have good enough eyes to enjoy open sights.

I did not find a whole lot about these rifles while searching other than a couple listings. I figure it was an attempt by CZ to get into the hunting rifle market by copying its Austrian neighbors finest rifles. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that. I figure I’d post everything I know and see if anybody else had better information or anything to add.

So back to my story, I’d say this is about as close to a Mannlicher Schoenauer as you can get without having a real deal. It shoots well enough with factory ammo but dies are already on the way and this little carbine is gonna have a deer to its name before the end of this year.

Wow! That is a beaut! That type stock always reminds me of a used rifle that was on a website of a very well known mega gunshop in my area. The son was in charge of listing used guns on the website and he had this particular rifle listed as a Manlicker. I often wonder if his dad ever saw it! He would have been furious!

I'm only guessing at what you paid for the rifle, but whatever it was you got it too cheap. It's a great rifle and well worth having. congrats.

That is a BEAUTY! What a nice find of a fantastic gun, and if you got it at a great deal, all the better. There's something about the feel of those old Czech guns. :)

Range report with factory ammo will be soon.
