I just purchased a Mannlicher-Schoenauer at an auction this morning. I need some help identifying the exact model, etc. I especially am trying to figure out if this is a 7x57 Mauser or a 7x64 Brenneke.

I have inserted the picture files from the auction catalog.

I am thinking it is either a Model 1910 or 1924 but I'm not sure. The caliber is listed as "CAL 7m/m S". The barrel length is 22 inches, it has a half stock, straight butterknife handle, tang peepsite, and double-leaf rear sights. It also has the double set triggers and a cheek piece on the stock. The half stock is a pistol grip with a cap, has a curved metal buttplate, has a schnabel foregrip with black inset, and is amber yellowish in color. The color in the picture is fairly accurate. I'm not sure if this is an unstained walnut or what.

The barrel has some exterior pitting and a smattering of rust that should come off. I'd put the blueing at 60-70%. Inside the barrel looks pretty good with sharp rifling and a bright bore. Given that I got it for $180, I'm pleased with the purchase. It seemed like a reasonable price for a Mannlicher-Schoenauer shooter.

Thanks for the help in ID'ing this.

That's almost surely a 7X57. But if you're worried, you can order Cerrosafe from Brownells and do a chamber case. Cerrosafe melts at below the boiling point of water and will allow you to make an accurate chamber cast.

I had a mystery M/S a few years back and had to do a cast to figure out what it was. It's worth the trouble to be sure, as the markings are both hard to interpret and unreliable.
