I got some Hornady XTP bullets for my sig p220 .45 and the wifes sig p229 .40 and would like to load them up for home defence rounds and am un sure what powder that i already have should i use??

The powders i have
IMR 700x, Ramshot Zip, Clay's, Titegroup, N320 and Winchester 231

The bullet weights are 185 grain for the .45 and 155 grain for the 40.

I know that a .357 is a much better home defence gun but we got to use what we got
 
If you have a .45 ACP and a .40 S&W, a .357 is not a better home defense gun.

Consider the muzzle blast & flash lighting the blown-off wall paper on fire and you will find both your guns are probably more logical choices for HD guns.

On the question of which powder to use?

All of the powders you listed are suitable for the .45 ACP & .40 S&W.
Some more so then others, but the WW-231 will do fairly well in both.

Have you consulted a loading manual?

yea i have looked though my load manuals but they don't show mussel flash nor real life expericeses i don't want me or my wife to end up needing to shot it in the not so lite up house and be blinded by the flash.

I know that the 700x in my .45 is like a fire breathing dragon but it's so much a fire breather in the 40
 
If you already loaded practice rounds for these calibers, you might want to consult that data first. If you have not loaded practice rounds yet, I would encourage you to do so and use that data for determining the best combination. I have no experience with the 700x or N320, but Zip, titegroup, and clays are all fast powders. W231 is a venerable powder for 45 Auto and should perform well in 40 S&W.
 
i have loaded plenty of practice rounds for both of these guns but have never loaded anything other then berry's plated bullets at the lowest powder charge that the manual that i choose to use lists for the powder, this will be the first time i will be loading a bullet for more then punching paper not that i plan on using them, i just like to be prepared just in case and have something that is going to have some stopping power even if the shot placement isn't that great.

none of my manuals have +P loads for the .45 or the .40
