Here's the deal. I have a M500 w/ multiple barrels to currently serve as a HD, deer and bird gun. For deer and bird, its perfect. I can empty the magazine quick so I don't think I need a semi plus pump action is more reliable.

I'd like to get a Knoxx recoil reducing buttstock but my dilemma is with the controls. I prefer the slide release on the M500 but the safety won't work with the pistol grip. The safety on a 870 would work well with the pistol grip but I don't like the location of the slide release.

Does anyone have a knoxx buttstock on an 870 or M500 and how do you like them?

you give up a lot with a Knoxx, not the least of which is a good cheek weld. And there's the issue of manipulating the controls. I definitely feel they're mmuch better on an 870. If you really feel the need for a new stock ona SERIOUs gun, I'd give the Hogue Reduced L.O.P. stock a looksie.

The knoxx stock is great if you want to go completely mall ninja and attach a red dot. Cheek weld and full-power loads are synonymous with 'going a round with a prize fighter.' Because the receiver and pistol grip climb on a short rail as part of their spring-assisted deceleration and lowered recoil impulse, they force the stock up into your cheek. You either need a sight that doesn't necessitate a cheek weld (like a rail-mounted dot) or you can do it the old fashioned way and get a rubber butt pad to use with your fixed stock and perfectly good brass bead.

Head to http://gunbroker.com and pick up a Maverick 88 trigger group. It's a drop in replacement for the Mossy 500 and gives you a triggerguard safety. Your top mounted 500 safety will then be inactive, though, so be sure to remember that.

1) Make sure the current stock you have fits you properly. If it doesn't, get it fitted.

2) Have a premium recoil pad installed.

3) Make sure you are using a good gun mount into your shoulder pocket and that your form (foot placement, weight distribution etc) is correct.

Shotgun stocks in their conventional configuration/design have been refined over several centuries to do what they do. There's nothing else out there that does it better IMHO- as long as your stock fits you well.

To improve the cheek weld on the Knoxx, I provisionally suggest the PowerPak. The low attachment fits me perfectly with the stock set at it's longest LOP.

However, the way the Knoxx is designed means that if you adjust the stock to a shorter LOP it actually gets higher. So if you have short arms and high cheekbones you are SOL.

This is interesting. I didn't know you could switch trigger groups. I've been looking at replacing the recoil pad but most only list for the M500 synthetic stock. Sims does sell one for the wood stock but it requires some inletting. Does anyone know of a recoil pad for the wood stock that doesn't require modifications?

No such animal.

A pad adds an inch or more to the length of the stock.
So you must cut off an inch or more of wood to make up the difference.

The pre-fit pads for synthetic stocks simply replace the old pad with a new pad without changing the length of pull of the stock.

I just got a reply from Mossberg. According to them, the Maverick trigger group is not interchangeable with the M500.

A "slip on" type recoil pad will work on the wood stock without modification. Simms makes the "Limbsaver" in several sizes. You may need to take off the stock pad to maintain the same LOP. The Limbsaver works great!!!!

dispatch is right. The trigger groups are not interchangeable. That being said Mossberg REALLLY should listen and put out a 500 with the trigger guard mounted safety.

Or ya could ya know, get a maverick.

I had a Knoxx on a Winchester 1300 worked good for offhand shooting. Traded it on a 11-87 and have never looked back.

But why not just just tactical/low recoil buckshot or slugs for HD?
