Home Made Gun Vise

I would guess this is the appropriate place for this thread. So I decided insted of paying 50 bucks for a gun vise i would make my own out of scrap lumber, It is a little rough but fits my need perfectly. What do you guys think?

Hey Guru1911,

Looks like the kid's gonna outdo you on your homemade suggestions!! Keep it up Matt, ol' Guru will probably be asking you to run these ideas by him before posting on here!! LOL Works for me Matt, thanks for being on the forum here, us old guys like to be shown up.

Well, I am not any kind of guru, but I don't think that setup will hold the gun steady enough for any serious work. The rear stock clamp is too shallow and that tie-down won't hold it against any real pressure. Same for the front clamp.

There is nothing wrong with a home made gun vise if it works, and the price will be right, but I suggest a bit more study of the ones on the market. They are made the way they are for a reason, not just to get more money from the buyer.

Actually i thought the rear would be too shallow to but actually the clamp hold the gun hery securely the only wobble i git would be from that old table it was on.

Matt: Whatever works for you so long as it is safe for you & the firearm, will cause no damage to the weapon, & satisfies the need you have, then use it---i congratulate you for this example of creative out-of-the-box thinking. Atta-boy matt. Git-er-done young fellow. Even us old guys can learn something new if only we are willing to listen to the youngsters.
 
Thanks Guru, I'm actually already thinking of how i can improve upon this, maybe some kind of screw with a pad sort of like on an old c clamp, have one side fixed, but I'm not sure if that would damage the finish....
 
Thanks for your post and pics,Matt018. I have been thinking about building one,too,and with the high quality photos I can get lots of ideas from your build. I have some oak that is well over 100yrs old and plan on using it for both a cleaning stand and a reloading block that can hold 50 rounds instead of 40 like the one that came with my Rockchucker.
 
if you are making a block like that i would reccomnd a drill press to make the block more uniform.
