I, like most people, have many items of value in my home; including my arsenal. I have considered a gun safe, security company, standalone security system, claymores, and guards  to protect my assets. I think I have settled on a security system from www.homesecuritystore.com . Does anybody have any experience with wireless home security systems (reliability, battery life, etc)?

klover: I considered getting extra insurance just for the guns. I am looking for a one time investment that doesn't require reoccuring payments. I hate reoccuring bills, especially taxes and insurance. I don't know how much the nra would charge for that type of insurance. That is definetly something I will investigate. Keep in mind that I also want to "protect" my other possesions.

The particular alarm system I was looking at has an auto-dialer. When the alarm is tripped, it calls you. In my particular application I work 3 minutes from home. So I could respond asap. I would bet that 99% of the time went an alarm goes off the would be burgular would leave.

cloudedice: That is a very informative thread. The only thing that thread doesn't cover is specific opinions about the reliablity of wireless home security systems. That is what I am really after. Thanks for the help thus far.

Since any and every home security system can be defeated by the right criminals, I went for the cheaper option of insurance. I got enough insurance to cover all my stuff for $100/year. That's better than a $600 safe that some jerk can break into in 15 minutes. I have a cheaper safe too, to keep out the smash and grabs.

ServiceSoon, unfortunately there is no good "One Time Payment" for gun insurance that I know of. The best bet I have seen is to get a rider with your home owners insurance. This way if your house in robbed or you have a fire, everything including your guns is covered. Check what you limit is on your homeoners policy is now. There is usually a $1000 or $2000 limit for firearms on a regular homeowner policy, so if you have a small collection you might not need any extra coverage.

I like security systems, as an overall layered defense for your home, however if you live in a real rural area, I like the central monitoring types like ADT, Brinks, and others. Again its a monthy bill, but at least if someone breaks in you have a call going out to 911, instead of just a siren.

My insurance is for renters, and comes with a $3000 firearms rider that cost an extra $24. I also get $1000 coverage from being an NRA member :D

what about insulated concrete forms, they come in CADs that allow hidden bunkers , to secret storage. With the proper know how and a little added money you can keep your priceless items that money could not replace safe.

Not a cheap method.
