Homeland Security loses nearly 200 guns

I dont know what kind of action they would take against someone that lost thier sidearm, i doubt they would face criminal prosecution. At most they probably faced a deduction from thier pay.

I know I would not want to be the individual that found the firearm and then kept it instead of turning it in to law enforcement. I wouldnt even advise picking the gun up if I saw it in a public area. I would call law enforcement on the spot.

Possession of a FOUND firearm is not a crime, by all information that I can find. It might be unethical, but it isn't receiving stolen property (i.e., pistol left in a toilet stall by a Homeland Security officer, or AR-15 left in the street from the roof of a curiser, etc).

Not that I'm defending the loss of these guns, but DHS is a huge agency, and includes ICE, Customs and Border Patrol, the Secret Service, the Coast Guard and other components that have a heck of a lot of guns. The agency has nearly 200,000 employees (though most admittedly do not pack heat).

Again, it's never acceptable, but human beings make mistakes; it would be interesting to see how these numbers compare to the number of losses among other law enforcement agencies, the DoD, and private owners.

plus... if i leave my bike unlocked in my driveway and you take it, its theft in many locales...
i imagine a creative prosecutor would be able to charge you with unlawful possession of a weapon in many places...
plus it is way beyond unethical... i know alot of people seem to have a borderline compulsive drive to point out the wrongdoing of the "oppressors" ...but for the most part they(The "oppressors") arent all that different from you and me... they just wear a uniform and are charged with enforcing some (sometimes stupid) laws...

There isnt any "haha look what he did" defense to most crimes so...

I would imagine if a weapon is in some way marked saying "property of US Government" and has a serial number on it that was added by an agency in addition to the manufacturer serial it would be a bad idea to just stick it in your pocket and walk away.

including handguns, shotguns and military rifles

I wonder if these were evil black semi-automatic assault weapons with high capacity magazines and pistol grips allowing them to spray bullets and that are only designed to kill people with the shoulder thing that goes up.

Or if the were just select fire rifles?

I can barely manage to stomach Tax payers having to pay anyone's salary.

I do not believe in Taxpayers paying for anyone's anything-else.

If every agency or department or bureau at every level had to buy their own stuff, finance and pay for their own buildings and cars and uniforms and typewriters and so on, with Bake Sales or other ingenuity which thereby might actually allow them SOME interface with 'reality' and with the Society they supposedly serve, in ways different from their usual insular removedness and 'we is bettuh den dem' and 'us-against-them' esprit, we'd have a far Far FAR healthier Society.

No reason why it could not be that way, either...other than corruption...
