Homeland Security- what would U do?

There was mention on a popular radio news show today that new evidence was uncovered that Al Quaida operatives planned (& may still plan) to set massive fired within our national forests, causing mass devastation like happened in Australia awhile back. The Homeland Security advisors have said that, if we see something suspicious, we should report it.:what: ???

I dunno about y'all, but if I see someone in MY piney woods with a flamethrower or other such device, or doing any such deed, I'd have to shoot first & call later.

What say you?

The most curious thing about the terrorists attacks, to me, is the fact that there haven't been more of them yet.

The forest fire method has crossed my mind before, along with dozens of other possible methods that could cause massive damage with little effort and planning.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet.

Agreed.

They dont really have to do a whole hell of a lot really. Why spend a dime or lift a finger when simple blog chatter is enough to spiral all of America into Orange funk.

Uhhh, oh ya, the question.... What would I do? Well I would assess the situation as it developed and then use my assessment to quickly construct a plan of action. Taking into account whatever skills, tools and options are available to me at the time the incident unfolded. Once my 'action plan' is realized (hopefully that wont take to long) I'd start choppin wood. If ya know what I mean.
 
IIRC didn't the Japanese try that with float planes launched from submarines in WWII?
 
Forest fires do cause huge amounts of damage. And sometimes (OK, often) they do damage to man-made structures and private property.

But how many lives are lost each year in forest fires? With the exception of the firefighters themselves, I think there are few deaths related to the fire.

What I'm getting at is that a forest fire, or many, wouldn't be much of a terror for most of the public.

- We have tremendous fire fighting/containing capabilities.

- Anyone near a fire would be evacuated as the fire advanced.

- Property is easily replaceable. Especially with insurance and disaster funds.

- Only a small portion of the US can sustain large forest fires. Of those areas, much of it is unsettled/sparsley populated.

I think terrorists can find better ways to create terror. Forest fires would be a royal pain, but not likely terrifying.

It's not necessarily about how many lives or casualties you inflict. The fires themselves would be disruptive to average routines place a heavy demand on various resources. They would redirect attention from one priority and focus it on another possibly as a diversion to a real target. The other possibility would to set enough to overwhelm services where there would be a threat to life and property.

Exactly. Part of terrorism is getting the dog to chase its own tail. And, brother, you gotta admit we are doing a great job of that in this country!

I have a theory that the so-called terrorist have basically blown their wad.
I don't think they are up to any more huge events like 911. It was their one lucky-shot.
In any case, I would rather ignore the so-called terrorist threat and live free taking a chance rather than living in a quasi-police-state.

If you mean my own property, I would try to arrest them or chase them away. If you mean the "national forests", who cares? I don't have any stake in them. Let "Smoky the Bear" put it out.

I wouldn't call "homeland security" if I saw Osama and Saddam having coffee and scones at Barnes and Noble.

Frankly, terrorists aren't the people I'm most worried about when it comes to forest fires. Last year we had a whole bunch of fires here in Colorado, and most of the big ones were started by Federal Forest Service workers.:fire:

I'd call the authorities. A terrorist caught is far more valuable than a terrorist killed.
 
BTW, I am a former volunteer firefighter/paramedic; I was working with a local dept. near my home years ago when there were several forest fires endangering my home & property- yes, I said SEVERAL. When we got the handle on one, another popped up from another direction. We found out it was the chief's son who was setting fires, trying to get back at several of us for not allowing him to fight fire with us. He was really angry, off-center, a dopehead & had problems/issues with the world in general. His way of solving problems was with violence.

Needless to say, it was all hushed up...and no, the chief, nor his wife, nor any of his kinfolk helped us neighbors who were in direct danger of getting burned out. Fortunately, I had cleared land around my and my mother's residences, but they sure tried.

Shortly thereafter, after a dangerous stunt by the chief's wife, 17 of us quit the dept., and the week after, several more left. This left the dept. with three people, one 1946 Mack engine, a firehouse & little of anything left. State could have shut them down, but we "quitters" shut up, since the whole communities' insurance rates would have tripled, so we let folks build it back up, gradually. The attrition rate was horrible, though.

Needless to say, this was one instance of internal people being their own terrorists!

And, to update my answer: I'd LET the perps die for Allah! Maybe THEY'D be one of the devil's many virgins! Ah ha ha ha ha!:fire: :fire: :fire:
