I recently purchased a 12" ar500 plate and was wondering if anyone had any portable stand ideas? The place I go shooting is on a hill side to the stand would have to be easy to carry by 1-2 people and able to be put on slanted ground, ie. its going to have to stake in. I've used chicken wire stakes previously with a smaller plate but they felt about at capacity and leaned in during the day. Any ideas on how to implement similar stakes in a more stable manner?

rbernard, the big question when it comes to stands is do you want it to be something very durable that can withstand a hit from what ever you are shooting at it, or do you want something cheap that you expect to break after a few hits of the stand and is cheap or easy to replace.
For the first option, its going to be hard to make it very portable since it will most likely be made of heavy steel. However, if you go the second route for more or less disposable stand, you get many more options. They range from nailing together some 2x4s and drilling holes in the base so you can stake it down, which will get very chewed up by splatter, to buying some threaded steel piping and rebar. You make a big upside down U out of the piping, and drive the rebar into the ground leaving a little over a foot stick out. Slip the pipe over the rebar and hang the target from the top of the upside down U. The steel piping shouldn't be affected by the splatter, can take a few direct hits, and can be carried by two people with out a problem. You can also do more or less the same thing with PVC if you are shooting smaller rounds, but it will get chewed up by splatter eventually and you might cut yourself on embedded splatter. Pulling the rebar out of the ground when you are done is a bit of a hassle though.

I made an "A" frame from conduit. Looks much like a child's swing but smaller.
Just smash the ends and drill a hole at each junction for a bolt and wing nut.
Easy to take apart and light to carry. Shouldn't be any problem to stick the back legs into the bank.

I use two 2" steel channel 2' tall welded to a light steel base about 3' square using 2"X2" fir wood in a wood frame with the gong hung between the frame. The frame will take several hits and the gong moves freely. I might also put some heavy rocks on the base to keep it from falling over. In other words I place the 2" wood into the 2" steel channel making a wood frame to hold the gong with a metal chain. Hopefully this makes some sense. I drive my truck out in the desert and drop off the target stand and the gong. Works for me!
