Hoosiers-do you use state ranges,which ones?

I've noticed a few folks from my neck of the woods here.
Range officer told me other day,numbers have dropped to the point that closing of a couple ranges may be coming,more due to folks not signing in,than actual useage.
Which do you use? What plus's and problems have you incountered? I prefer jasper-pulaski,the yardage's are correct(and they have a 225 yard range),but also frequent willow slough,and in a pinch,Lasalle.
If you do use,please sign in,quilty myself on occasision.
 
I shot at Jasper-Pulaski a number of times when I lived out there. It's an ok range. Things I didn't like about it: unsafe gunhandling by idiots, and range officers who were more interested in throwing their weight around than they were in throwing unsafe idiots out.

There's one north of JP by another 20-30 minutes. I forget the name of it, but it's a really nice facility. I only shot there once.
 
El tejon, you serious? Untill lately(They just opened a Isak Walton near here,it has a range)they were the only place some of us had.......
 
Matt, yes. I don't support using violence for a select group. Besides, he who takes the king's shilling . . . .

However, that's just me and I only get one vote in the general election. Obviously getting something for nothing over paying your own way is far more popular political position.

I find it very amusing that shooters, those "rugged individualists" who "take care of their own", who decry the sofasitter and welfare queens turn around and stick their hands into the public trough. Everyone out of the wagon. YMMV.
 
Camp Atterbury

It's actually across the road from the Camp in Edinburgh Indiana.
They have a 25 meter, 50 meter and 100 meter ranges.Good for working on your zero.
It's a half hour drive south of Indy straight down 65.
Open to the public,also open to the idiots.

Sorry to stray from your question about Indiana ranges.

Here in Michigan I shoot handguns primarily at privately owned but open to the public indoor range. I shoot shotgun and rifle at the Michigan DNR ranges. There are some local gun clubs nearby but you have to "know" someone to get in and some of them have some pretty quirkie hours and rules.

I was going to use a quote from your thread to ask about, then I realized I don't understand any of it. You are welcome to your own opinion for sure, and seem to have a strong one. I guess I just don't understand it.

If you pay your taxes and you pay to use the range, what are you getting for nothing?

I guess the same question as above.

I just don't see what is wrong with using a State operated facility. I won't use them on weekends when they are busy, for safety concerns primarily, and not liking to spend as much time waiting on people to hang targets as actually shooting.
 
I also do not "get it".The state ranges are paid for by hunters,trappers and fishermen,where did you think the moneys came from?
 
Ringer, taxes are collected via violence. I do not support using violence against my fellow citizens for the benefit of a select few. I believe we should pay our own way.

Do you think your taxes pay for the entire range or do others help you out? Do you think you would pay the same cost if you had to pay for what you take? Of course not.

Surely you've heard of the shooters whine about the welfare state and how ruggedly independent they are, yet they cry out for a turn at the public hummingbird feeder when it benefits them. If this is truly the case, then we should be first to pony up.

Of course, I realize paying for stuff is highly unpopular. Everyone gripes about those in the wagon, but no one wants to help push it.:p
 
As far as taxes, I'm sure lots of what I pay goes to things I will never benefit from. So I don't mind using State operated facility that I do not fully fund.

I'm not looking for a free ride.

Still don't understand the violence thing.

I think we must be very different in our views and lifestyles so I will probably never get it.

El Tejon , what about the fees from the hunting/fishng permits ? some of that money goes into slush fund to operate them . so In actuallity they are paying for them , and I as a Non Resident have had the chance to use some of the facilitys ,(willow ,Jasper/pulaski, and the one over by Bass Lake on rt35) but I also do purchase licenses when required (fishing) You should feel lucky you have them , I do not know of any Public Rifle or handgun ranges in the Peoples Social Idiots rebublic IE Ill., Also from growing up in northern Ind ( Hamlet In ) I didn't know of any private ranges in the area ( but then again its farmland ), and when I did move to the big city ( Crown Point ) I only Knew of one in town (still there on the Square) . You are going to pay for things you don't want to thru taxes So you might as well enjoy them while you got them . and pick up after yourselfs THe time I went out to J-P it was a mess ..

As to violence, state action involves violence. I see it daily. Just think about what happens if you don't pay your taxes.:uhoh:

coonan, just up on my soapbox. I don't want anyone to be forced to pay my way, fishermen included.:)
 
El TeJon , I don't mindpaying for the Use of somethings , Your states DnR stocks up on fishys and does some good things like making the ranges with the money and makes them accessable to all , not like over here , wher you can be jailed and fined for being on Public domain , and watch them spend big bucks on Suvs for the officers.

If you're willing to pay for your range, why not pay for your range?

Put another way, I believe El Tejon is suggesting that the 11% tax on firearms and ammo and the like should be ditched in favor of a pay-for-play private system. (you build range, I come shoot, I pay you money)

I thought they closed the public range at the Camp due first to Sept 11 and then because it was activated.
 
Cordex , the ranges up here in Ill are getting rediculous , in prices 12 an hour , and they limit you on what you can shoot and the owners are sometimes Nazis , I have been harrased on 2 of them because of my coonan , they thought I was shooting some sort of super hot reload , when I was shooting box stock 158s , They do not want to see what the Hot reloads look or sound like out of this gun on an enclosed range , my favorite indoor range is going to be closing , I wish someone would buy it and keep it open . as for the cost of operating a indoor range yet alone an outdoor one in a populated area it is expensive . and alot of people fight it when they hear about one opening . also I like shooting outdoors instead of in the dark. and believe me I don't just purchase fish stamps only I do get deer tags in several states so I can have my venison . the taxes help not just with care and maint. but in hunter saftey courses for the children( bow and gun ) , restocking programs not just for fish ,(I saw my first ringneck pheasent in 16 years , 3 weeks ago ) also for research for the diseases that animals get . and reforestation projects, land management . and for land buys ( would you rather have subdivisions or open fields?? ) what does the local range provide ?? Just a place to safely shoot thats it .oh yes and a Range owner who always B**ches about us gunners shooting up the place or hes not making enough money .. $100 a year in tags or stamps is only 10 hours of shooting time for me at a private range .

and El Tejon as for your troopers in green I have met them , you right , not to freindly but then again most of the leo types aren't ..KIdding guys , I had a little chat with one last year you wouldn't be a happy camper either after dealing with some of the morons these guys have to deal with .. and some of them are from Illinois.. ( Not me :D) he told me about some guys from chicago who said said that Indiana laws didn't apply to him because he was from Illinois .the way people treat the land and willfully destroy it . old grampa rules" abuse it and loose it"
 
In Michigan I pay 6% sales tax on guns and ammo, just like on anything else I purchase. I do have to get a "permit" to purchase a handgun and have it "safety inspected" after but that doesn't cost any $, just some time and yes maybe some of my rights. Indiana must be different. Is there an 11% tax that applies to firearms only? If so then I can understand some of our differences.

I use an indoor (pay my own way as you call it) range for handguns. As far as paying my way at an existing rifle/shotgun club, they are difficult to get into without knowing current members. And the ones around here, some of them anyway, have scheduled shooting times and events that may or may not meet my schedule. So even if i could get in, not sure I would.

I just don't get the issue with DNR ranges. I show up, pay my $4 and follow the rules and shoot away.

Is this any different than operating my boat and jet ski on a lake that has a DNR maintained access? Or should I buy my own lake too? :) Should I not take my kids to the park down the street because I don't own it? Or is it just with firearms you should "pay your own way"? Guns are a part of my life but so are lots of other things. I don't see how literally "paying your own way" in today's society is really possible.
I work hard, I take care of my family, I have fun and sometimes I'm a couch potato. I also own guns.
Don't mean to argue, I guess I am missing the issue here.
 
DNR property

Cordex, right outside the main gate to the Camp.
It's DNR property,a few thousand acres of hunting,fishing ground.
You obiviously cant get into Camp Atterbury unless your on the list to shoot NMC on the day of the shoot.
But across the road is DNR and the range is open wed-sun 8:00-5:00.
 
I shoot at two DNR ranges: Huntington Resivoir/Roush Lake and Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area. Tri-county is definitely the nicest, range and best thought out of the two. If you get anywhere close to the North Webster/Syracuse area, I'd recommend Tri-County.

I use the Atterbury range, only because its the closest range that I know of. If anyone knows of another one, either private or public, convenient to south-Indy I would like to hear about it. I'm not talking about indoor ranges. I wouldn't mind paying for the privelege if thats what it takes.
