I am trying to develop a hunting load for my 4&5/8” .45 Cal Ruger Blackhawk. This hunting load will have a MAX range of 30 yards and a desired range of less than 20 yards with a desired muzzle velocity around 900fps.

Hornady bullets are extremely common around me so while I’m not limited to their lineup it simply is easier to use Hornady.

I had a bad experience with a Hornady XTP and two great experiences with Hornady FTX so I would like to try it in my Blackhawk.

Here are my thoughts:
I could load the bullet in a .45 Colt case but it would require I trim short some of my limited supply of .45 Colt cases.
I could trim the spire point off the FTX and load it in a standard case and treat it like a similar weight jacketed bullet. Although I’m curious how removing a large portion of the point will affect expansion.
I can carefully develop a load with an untrimmed bullet in a .45 ACP case because it will have plenty of room in the cylinder.

Basically all these thoughts are exercises to not trim the brass short.

Tell me your thoughts, thanks.
