I have an older 7th edition Hornady reloading manual. For the Hornady 230 grain LRN bullets (#12308) it shows a min/max range using Bullseye of 4.5 to 5.7 grains with a COL of 1.245".

Does the current 8th edition show this same information for this powder? I've come into surprise possession of a couple hundred of these, just checking for updates before I load them to an indicated 700fps. A pdf of the 45ACP section from the 8th edition would be great.

TIA

Hornady 8th edition shows 4.4 Gr start charge of Bullseye.

The max charge is 5.5 Gr to what it shows for the 230 Gr LRN #12308

OAL is the same, 1.245.

Every new edition gets slower and slower for Hornady. I've accused them of having their wives and mothers work up the data.

I was looking at some old 7mag load data that I had and compared it to the 8th Hornady and was way overloaded. I am quite skeptical of maximum loads anymore and am thankful to have load manuals spaning 40 yrs to give some perspective. Not saying the old should be written in stone just saying todays max is at times near what the old starting load was and don't be surprised if what was your go to load in the past might be an overload today.

Thanks Josh. Is the velocity noted at the 4.4 grain start charge still 750 fps? Looking more and more like 4.0 grains is where I want to start for my target velocity loads.

This trend of decreasing "max" loads is troubling. First, the data are supposed to be based on actual testing. Unless Hornady et al are using lower-quality components and test guns for each edition, the max should be the same unless the powder formula changes. Second, this overly cautious approach is sure to backfire when reloaders no longer take the max specs seriously.

John,

Wish I could tell you. I don't have the book in front of me right now and is about 60 miles from me. But IIRC, I think that the 4.4 Gr is the 700 FPS area? Dont hold me to that as I am not 100% sure.
