I'm new to reloading. I had planned on purchasing a Hornady classic press kit. Does the Hornady classic single stage press work for re-loading loading 45-70 rounds? Someone at my local Cabelas cautioned me to make sure that Hornady classic press has a long enough stroke to handle 45-70 rounds. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I don't own a Hornady classic. I have a friend that loads 30/06 rifle on one. I am pretty sure that it is longer than a 45-70. The length is the limiting factor. I'm also pretty sure the Hornady Classic will handle most any rifle round short of the 50bmg.

Not knocking the guys at Cabelas, there are some smart people there. However, I've over heard some things suggested about reloading that were just flat out wrong. If you are just starting out, a good reloading book is worth its weight in gold. Reading one will give you the best info. You can ask here as well. Happy reloading.

The person in Cabela's who told you the Hornady Classic single stage press will notepad the 45-70 was incorrect. That press has a 3.75" ram throw and the 45-70 has a max case length of only 2.105".

That is a full size press that will load most cartridges. The Classic kit is on sale right now on Midway USA for $274.99 which is a $65 savings.
