He ya'll! Been a while.

Have any of you ever attempted/succeeded in duplicating loads for Hornady Light Magnum loads in 30-06? Specifically the 165 gr BTSP at 3010 FPS and 180 gr. BTSP at 2900 FPS.

Later,

No problem, just got to use the right powder. With a 190SMK and RL22, I get 2900fps easily without problems. With a 178gr Amax and N160, I get 2950fps. With your 165gr and 180gr bullets, I would try RL19 or N160 powders.

Picknlittle: A freind had some of the Hornady Lt. Mags in a few different cartridges. He took one of each appart to see which powder and the grain weight was. The powder was so tightly packed, that he had to use a dental pick and lots of pounding to get it all out.

Of course he couldn't tell what powder it was by sight. When he tried to put the powder back into the case, it wouldnt fit, even compacting it with a bullet.

When he called the Hornady people, he was told it was a canister powder not availble to the public, and that they had machines with special very long drop tubes which packed the powder to a high density.

The velocities can be reached in the 30-06 with slightly higher pressure then SAAMI allows. The `06 is loaded to lower pressure then other cartridges based on the same brass and usually can be pushed to the higher levels safely. Reaching the same velocity within SAAMI pressure I doubt is something the average reloader can do with todays components.
