Hornady LNL AP High Primers - any one else experienced this?

Have you taken a primer pocket uniformer tool to the brass just to check?

Mine works perfectly. I also like the idea of checking that something is obstructing the backstroke from going 100% down.

Dave B posted my desired fix. If the primer punch was just a tiny little bit longer, I'm sure it would work perfectly. Hornady tech said that he would have loved to send me one, but they don't make them longer than standard size.

We checked all the other possibilities - loose bolts, plates, stray powder flakes, full travel of the handle and ram without interference. I even put a dime under the primer punch to see if the worn out spot on the press frame is causing short strokes of the punch.

Hornady will get their chance to tweak this machine after UPS picks it up on Monday. :)

If there was an Allen setscrew in the frame that was the same dia. and right under the punch, you could have it flush, or slightly above to whatever height you wanted. I may try to do that.

I have also noticed that the press is sometimes tricky to get primers installed well. I gave up on CCI primers- especially in .45ACP for this reson. I don't suspect it's the press since WLP will seat fine... usually. The remaining problem is it's tough to get a good feel when using mixed brass. R&P and Federal seat fine.. but throw in an S&B or Winchester case and I don't often get a good seat as they need a little extra force. When I sort my brass I can usually get primers well seated with any brand. It is alarming to me how much pressure you need to apply on the handle in many cases.

FWIW I use a hardened washer under the primer punch on the frame of the press as the punch pin was pushing a dimple into the frame which is aluminum. I haven't found my shell plate to be lose during reloading.

Oh- one more thing- I've now done several batches with brand new Starline brass- the primers seat VERY well in those cases... much more than any other brands I've reloaded.

Bottom line- I don't think it's the press (it could be in your case I guess).
