Got a spent primer jam in the brass drop tube of my Hornady LNL AP. Small pistol primers... :banghead:

How do you remove this tube? Is it screwed into the sub-plate assembly or is it permanently pressed in place?

I've honestly never looked at it to see how its attached. But my advice would be to remove the shellplate and use either a straightened wire coat hanger or an old small gun cleaning rod and try to knock the jam loose that way. It would probably be easier to knock the jam loose from the bottom of the tube. If the tube is threaded in and they used any kind of thread locker, I'd be worried about crushing or bending that hollow brass tube trying to break it loose. I doubt it's pressed in but if it is that could cause problems trying to reattach it.

Kitsapshooter - the problem is the spent primer tube, the brass one that is attached to the sub-plate.

If its jammed up pretty good I'd be worried about that flimsy plastic rod breaking. I'd personally try something a little more solid, without ramming it in there too hard.

Could be more than one primer jammed up in there. I don't think I would notice if a single primer were jammed up in mine. Matter of fact, I think it'd be darn near impossible for a single small pistol primer to get jammed in the tube. Afterall, large primers tend to fall right through it.

Get a soft grip on it with some pliers with tape on it for protection. Then tap the pliers down, pulling the tube loose. Don't jam something into it to push the primers out. Gently tap the side on a flat surface until they loosen up and fall out.

Been there done that, learned the hard way. :)

The spent primer just fell. I doubt if it's jammed tight.
Right, not until one jams a rod down in there. Trust me on that one.

Thanks to all for the advice!! I used a cut-off wire hanger, and came up from below, poking at the jammed primers. There were five or six tight jams among 25 or more primers. Took a few minutes of impatient poking, but I got them all out.

After reading this, I looked at my LnL AP and discovered that if I removed the die from station one, I had a direct shot with my primer rod through the hole in the subplate directly into the brass tube. I could also stick an aerosol tube in the subplate hole for compressed air, One Shot, or WD-40, even bore cleaner...be creative.

For everyones future reference, I put a bolt or rod up into the bottom of the tube to prevent it from crushing when I clamp on a small pair of vise grip type pliers. Then just tap down on the pliers with a small hammer to remove the tube.
21,000 rounds and I haven't had a jam with spent primers yet. I do clean my tube by pushing small pieces of paper towel down the tube about every 1,000 rounds or so. It comes out very dirty. Give it a try, might prevent future problems!

Back when I had my Projector the bottle that held the primers was very small and filled up fast. When that happened the primers backed up in the tube, and if you did not notice it in time, it would jam them in. I have since ditched that tiny bottle for a specimen jar.

I have never run into that problem in 25k+ rounds. I have a small 4oz bottle attached to the hose to catch the primers. I kept knocking over the can and spilling them, so this put a end to that. I just empty it after every session.
