Hornady progressive measure setup

I saw on Hornady's site this morning a neat setup whereby one uses the Hornady powder measure with a "powder dispenser die" on a progressive press. I guess the empty cartridge activates the measure.

Anybody use one of these?

How accurate are your powder charges?

How accurate are they with the short stick powders like H4895?

I got a LnL powder measure with the Case activated powder drop with my new Hornady Progressive press... I like the measure very much, drops with AA #5 powder (one of the finer powders I have) is always within .1 grains of the target. Two things I'd point out; the measure comes standard with the standard rotor and insert, which is accurate for charges from around 10 grains on up... if you will be doing small pistol work (like my .45) with smaller charges, I recommend that you get the Pistol rotor and insert. It's easy to install, and ensures that you get accurate drops with smaller quantities of powder. The other thing; they ship this thing saturated in machine oil (I guess to prevent rust)... get a can of brake cleaner or Hornady one shot gun cleaner / dry lube and dissassemble, and clean all the oil out. Relube with powdered graphite. Also, rub down the powder hopper with an old dryer sheet (to cut static). After doing these things, mine has been working great.

This comes standard with the LNL auto press.

For the powders I've used-AA and Winchester-it is dead on and I seldom recheck after my initial setup and one check 20 to 30 rounds into production.

I would comment that the rechecks are not necessary, but Murphy gravitates to people that get lazy.

It seems to me that Hornady should simply add the pistol rotor as a standard feature; I was pulling my hair out trying to get a regular charge with the standard rotor. Once the pistol rotor is set, I have found the charges to be very consistent.

Yep... I might add I've ordered an additional measure (along with another case activated powder drop assembly) so I don't have to swap the pistol and standard rotors back and forth, should make life a little simpler, though switching back and forth isn't really that big a deal. They are fairly inexpensive at http://www.grafs.com. I have seen folks put these on their Dillon presses as well instead of the charge bar system they use... The inserts are inexpensive, some folks buy one for their pet load in each caliber and put 'em in the die box. They also offer a micrometer option (should make adjustment even easier), but I just jot down how far the adjuster is out of the insert for each charge, so I have a quick reference that I can fine tune from when I change charges or calibers.

The set up works good on the L-N-L and meters powder pretty consistent.

+/- 0.1 grains for Power Pistol, H110, W231, Universal Clays. Once I verify the charge I check once or twice in each 50 rounds. I do a visual on each case before I seat the bullet just in case. I haven't had any surprises up to this point - 8000 rounds and counting on my LNL.

Also consider the micrometer metering device. It is very easy to dial in any powder charge you need.
