Does anyone have experience hunting with Hornady SST 300 gr. sabots? I recently purchased a couple boxes of them for my Mossberg 500 slug gun and i've been told by multiple other people that I hunt with that the hornady slugs dont expand well and leave lackluster blood trails. Im curious as to if this is the general consensus for these slugs or if they were just pulling my leg

You hit them in the right place they aren't gonna go far. No experience with 12g sabot rounds, but with other FTX bullets IME they seem to be a little fragile.

They have been known to grenade when you hit any bone. I shot a small buck with one or two and one his shoulder bone and I was literally picking jacket pieces off the hide. I’d shoot a light field hybrid slug or a Remington accu tip

Killed the biggest buck of my life with one. I'll not use anything else if I can find them.

i've never used the 300 grain SST.

As a muzzleloader hunter i've used the 250 grain SST bullet successfully on a least 75 hogs and about 50 deer. The velocities of my shots are 1,800-2,000 fps, depending on rifle used. About half of my shots are bang flops. The hog at my avatar was killed with a 250 grain SST bullet. Powder load was 120 grains of Pyrodex; hog ran about 200 yards after the shot. Bullet was found under the skin on the far side.

I have experience with 20 ga SSTs only and can say they do break apart and every so often you will get a runner that will go 100 or more yds. I understand that can happen with any animal and any bullet but 90% of the time the animal will DRT.

Last year I used 250 gr FTX bullets (which I suspect is the same bullet as the 250 gr FTX 20 SST sabot slug) in factory loaded Hornady 450 Bushmaster. My first deer shot ran off 70 or so yds and barely left a blood trail. My next 3 were DRT.

I shot a 200+ pound southern Illinois buck with one, behind the shoulder walking broadside at about 55 yards. He ran lights out for about 90 yards and piled up. When I unzipped him it was strawberry milkshake throughout the entire chest cavity. Never seen such destruction, even with HV rifle rounds. Not sure I would trust it on a shoulder shot, but through the ribs it was deadly.

I have used them some. Can't imagine one not expanding, unless from ridiculously far. I have used them from 50 to 100 yards, and they hit like a hand grenade. Shoulder shots leave them in fragments.
