Hornet and heavier bullets

Never tried bullets over 50 grains my Hornets. About every ten years I load up 50 rounds with 55 grain Sierra bullets for a friend who deer hunts with a .22 Hornet.

The results will depend on the twist rate and barrel length of your rifle.

If it's one of the earlier firearms, but built after the transition to a .224" bore (originally they had a .223" bore), It'll most likely have a 1/16" twist. At the Hornets velocity, most 55gr and many 50gr bullets won't be adequately stabilized. Groups will be "patterns", that is, if they even hit the target.

Ruger started the trend in the '70's towards a 1/14" twist barrel for the Hornets. Most other manufacturers have followed.

The T/C Contender pistol I had in the '70's had a .224", 1/16" bbl, and WOULD NOT stabilize 50gr or heavier bullets due to slow twist and velocity.

The Ruger #3, 77/22 Carbine, and 77/22KBZ all had 1/14" twist barrels and shoot 50gr bullets exceptionally well. The current 24"bbl Stainless Ruger I have shoots the flat-based 55gr softpoints rather well, but very poorly with the boattailed ones, and "scatters and keyholes" the plastic pointed ones, particularily the Hornady V-max. The Noslers are a "little" better, but not much. But, even my .22-250 with a 1/14" twist won't shoot the 55gr V-max. (But my Rem M7 in .223 w/1/12", 18bbl" does!, go figure!)

My most accurate load to date for my .22Hornet Ruger 77/22KBZ is the Hornady 50gr SX, over 10.8gr of Acc#1680, a Win. Small Pistol primer, Winchester "match prepped brass" (weighed and sorted, neck turned, and full length sized- again go figure!), and seated to 1.835" oal. I've gotten numerous .7-.9moa groups, with one that went .445". Normally out of character for this rifle which normally runs 1.5-2.0moa with "anything".

However, it'll shoot the Hornady 55gr SX over 9.8gr Acc1680, or 11.0gr of Hod. LilGun to around 1.5moa. Ditto the 55gr Ptspt w/cannulure. (Or about as good as the 0.5MOA Rem M700 in .22-250 does).

FWIW: In my experience, anything over 50gr is "backing up" as far as the Hornet is concerned. I've shot a variety of game up to "smallish" white-tail deer with the Hornet, and prefer the 40-45gr bullets for all applications, except for the 33-35gr V-max bullets for "explosive expansion" applications. I have killed one (1), deer with the 35gr V-max, and don't recommend it, however, it was a "bang-flop" from a heart shot........
My "Go-too" load for accuracy and all-around performance from the Hornet is the 40gr Sierra "Varminter" H.P. seated to 1.78" oal over 12.0gr of Hod. Lil'Gun for ~3,150fps and .8-1.1moa accuracy. This bullet is designed/constructed to withstand over 4,000fps so exhibits "big-game" bullet performance from the "Hornet", but out to ~200yds will satisfactorily "disrupt" smaller vermin, but reliably take down yearling/doe deer with appropriate shot placement.
YMMV
