This friend of mind (I think he is) was telling me how you can make a very hot load by cutting off the white part of strike anywhere matches, and cure them into a liquid pouring them into a hollow point then covering them with wax. Says when they impact they will explode. Now this sounds all very James Bond like, but I don't plan on trying this until I hear from a good many of you on this subject!

Can you expound on your commet C&L, Now I know this sounds crazy, and I assure you I have no intention of trying this, but I was just wondering if this is possible
 
I'd guess the comment from Cocked & Locked was meant to convey that what you've asked about isn't really the smartest thing. I can't imagine that it'd actually work, and besides that - what would the application for "exploding" hollowpoints be? They're already pretty devastating on flesh.

Thank you Kingpin008 for setting me straight on this issue. Once again this was only a myth buster questions. I've been shooting for quite some time and I have no plans to try this.
 
Never heard of doing this. However, I know a guy that has drilled the hollow point cavity on a .22lr a little bigger and inserted Zippo flints into the hole. Pour gas on a steel target, shoot the target, watch the excitement.
 
If I were you I would ask myself why he is telling me how to do it instead of telling me how it went last time he did it. And my second question might be why do I want "exploding" bullets anyway? It sounds like a big fat waste of time to me.

On a side note, "hot loads" is talking about having more powder in the casing than a standard load. It is not about making "strike anywhere bullets". Welcome to THR!
 
I really don't understand why anyone wants to mess around with making something like this.

1. Jacketed hollow point bullets are already very effective.
2. If you ever used something like this in a self-defense situation, you'd be crucified.
3. If you just want to play with exploding bullets, get some from these guys, and be careful where you shoot them.
4. You'll probably find yourself wanting the use all ten of your fingers sooner or later, messing with home made explosives can be detrimental to that end.
 
Mixing flammable materials into ammunition not only sounds stupid but the ATF might consider it as making bombs.
 
Please someone tell me that they also posted something and wished they hadn't. Everyone that responded your answers were right on, and I really had no intention of doing this. I had enought exploding projectiles in South East Asia during Viet Nam.
 
A plugged hollow-point usually won't expand worth sour apples.

The red phosphorus mix used in strike-anywhere matches is not a high explosive in itself.
And I doubt you could get enough of it in a typical HP cavity do any bullet expanding.

SO, I call BS on the match-head thing.

Here, how bout this!
In my younger and more foolish days, I once had a 45-70 bullet mold that cast 500 grain bullets with an especially large & deep HP cavity. I found I could get a few grains of either crushed black powder or Bullseye pistol powder in it, and then seat a LG Rifle primer in the nose.

Neither combo expanded as much as a clean empty HP cavity in soft earth berms.

They all went off, and the BP ones even made a little puff of smoke when they hit something hard on the surface, but they didn't really do anything else, except not expand as much.

rcmodel...Elgin Gates said that early handgun silhouette shooters tried exactly what you did...with similiar results :)

Don't worry Harley Man...the only stupid question is the one not asked. This forum exists to exchange knowledge...and I'm sure all of us have asked questions that is hindsight didn't seem like a good idea. I for one enjoyed the question and the answers...but then...I'm easily amused :neener:
 
I used to shoot strike-anywhere matches against a brick wall with my dad's Crosman pellet pistol. They would explode satisfyingly upon impact.

I'm pretty sure you could use the white tips as emergency primer compound, or the red and white parts together as emergency propellant (this one might be dangerous), but "cure them into a liquid pouring them into a hollow point then covering them with wax" doesn't make any sense.
 
i think another problem is that when a hollow point expands. The speed and heat would just melt away your wax and move out the red phosphorus. making it useless.
 
Besides, the flame from the burning match heads would cauterize the wound, and the BG would never know he had been shot!

Didn't you ever watch the old western movies where they pull the arrow out and dump the black powder cartridge in the hole & light it? :eek:
