Gun stores: Jim Pruett's guns and ammo IIRC is near 290. I think there's a Carter's Country near 59.

Gun ranges: There are lots, but I go to American Shooting Centers on Westheimer.

lots of gun shows in the Houston area as well. there is the big Houston show at Reliant Center and another big one at the George R. Brown Convention Center downtown. there are also ones in the area, such as Pasadena, Conroe, etc. the thing about Texas is that if you have the itch to go to a gun show you can find one each weekend somewhere, be it either Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, or Austin, there is sometimes more than 1 per week somewhere in that area.

i believe there is a national or state park that has some sort of range about 1 hour outside of town that is full-auto friendly but i forget which one it is......sorry.

Hot, humid, traffic worst than LA on freeways. I belive it ranks high on hit list. for T's I have family their and no way Im ever moving to that hot place also dirty air. I used to go their at least once a mo. Sure Glad I retired. Tx a great state just not Major cities.

oh yeah i forgot. the traffic is terrible and the humidity is really bad in the summer. it is very spread out and it takes forever to get anywhere, since it is such a broad area.

rumor is the gentlemen's clubs in Houston are second to none though! not that i'd know from personal experience. :D

I won't argue with anything said so far but I'm not unhappy living here. You need to live near where you work. It's a huge city and the traffic is a mess. The summers are miserable but most days between October and May you can do things outdoors when folks up north are shoveling snow and freezing their tails off. There is the crime that you find in any big city but the vast majority of folks are friendly and polite except when behind the wheel and I don't feel unsafe here. Most of the LEOs seem to support legal CCW and it's probably a better place to be than many if you end up having to defend yourself or your home when it goes to the grand jury or court. Houston is very multicultural so you will hear lots of languages spoken wherever you go. It's very flat here so if you like to see hills and mountains you'll have to do some driving. We don't live in the floodplain but we do spend $300/year or so for flood insurance. There is no place in Houston that is immune to flooding when one of those 100 year events comes about.

There are plenty of gunshops, ranges, and clubs and a few decent indoor ranges for practice when it's too hot to practice outdoors and as stated there are still some decent gunshows from time to time. You can't carry in bars but you can in most restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages and I can count the number of 30.06 (legal notification that you can't carry here) signs I've seen on one hand with fingers to spare.

Hi, I've been living in Houston for 8 years now and like it here. It's still one of the more affordable cities in the U.S. My rent is about a third of what my friend pays in New Jersey across from Manhattan.

There are plenty of gun stores around, though I find their prices generally on the high side. Carter's country (4 locations around Houston) has a good selection with many guns on sale and a good choice of used guns as well. As has been mentioned, there are frequent gun shows here, and I've found some excellent deals at them. The best shows tend to be at the George R. Brown convention center and Reliant center. The show in Pasadena is better than the one up in Humble, which is very small. This from a gun show junky.

There are many nice places to live around town. I live close to the galleria and have never had any trouble walking around at night (I CCW, though). The good suburbs are Sugar Land, the Woodlands and Bellaire. Good advice on living close to work, as the traffic has got much worse since I've moved down here (especially around the galleria area). From what I understand, the commute from Sugar Land is not as bad as, say, Katy. I-10 seems always backed up. Generally speaking, avoid living anywhere east of downtown and places like Pasadena.

if you are looking for Class III weapons, Harris County and Houston PD do not sign. my understanding is that you have to either incorporate or reside out of the city limits and outside of Harris County in order to attempt a CLEO signoff.

Bass Pro Shops is in Katy, TX, which is west of Houston. Lots of Walmart and Academy stores for cheap ammo as well.

I lived in the Pearland area(South of houston) which was really nice and reasonably priced. The best shooting range in town was 5 minutes from me also. It is PSC in friendswood. www.psc-range.com Nothing else comes close. I liked Houston eventhough the weather was crazy humid. Traffic sucked but there are ways around it. Generally a nice place.
