Houston, TX range suggestions?

It's a big city :neener: Where will you be staying?

Outdoors: American Shooting Centers is really nice, but it's south of I-10 so if you're going to be north, that may not work so well. Carter's Country is good for far north/northeast Houston or Harris County. Real nice folks; that's where I shoot. Both of these places are fairly expensive, though. There's Shiloh Range, which I've heard good things about (indoor, I believe), Hot Wells out 290 (outdoor) and Top Gun down by the Galleria (indoor, very into Glocks).

Lots of choices, depending on where you'll be.

Springmom,

We are staying with one of my wife's relatives. She lives on the south end of Houston. The zip is 77089, if that makes a difference. We are trying to get our Mac to talk to her wireless network so we can look around town beyond our GPS and PDA's. Fortunately, we came with no agenda! Thanks for the suggestions.

Carter's Country is the only place I've shot in Houston, but I have to say it's a great place.

These are probably the closest to you. Also listed from best to worst in my humble opinion.

Bailey's House of Guns Inc.

Clear Creek Gun Range

Now if you want to travel a little ways, which is almost always the case in Houston. I would go with Carters, American or Top Gun as suggested earlier.

Good Luck, and let us know how you do.

I would go with Carters, American or Top Gun as suggested earlier.
I would not. Those places charge high prices and charge per gun.

Marksman Indoor Range in South Houston is pistol only. You can drag in as many pistols (and pistol caliber carbines) as you like. No time limit unless they are busy.

Pasadena Gun Center allows the use of any firearm. No limit on the number of firearms and you can stay as long as you like, unless they're busy. This is an indoor range.

Al's All American
1901 FM 1266, Dickinson
This address in in Dickinson, but actually it's out in the country closer to League City. Outdoor range, bring as many guns as you like. Skeet/trap range available.

Marksman is pistols/shotguns (10$ for shotgun)
Pasadena Gun Center is Pistol/rifle, full auto friendly.

Marksman's range crew is pretty quiet usually, PGC has a mixed bag. Usually the owner is happy, but sometimes not. The gunsmith is usually kinda grouchy but he's a nice guy.

Al toro's range is uncomfortable at best. Range officers are a little over zealous IMO, which isn't bad if everyone's minding their Ps and Qs, but if someone messes up somewhere, the entire range knows about it, prone to lectures over the loud speaker about people who've done something stupid like someone almost did or whatever.

I'm all for safety, but not for drama and unnecessary interruptions when I'm paying top dollar to pop off rounds that also cost top dollar. It just so happens to be right down the road from me, however, and is the only outdoor range within feasible driving distance.

Al's an ass, but he's a great guy if you get him alone and like to talk BS.

I would personally recommend marksman. Best circulation in south houston, plenty of lanes, quality hangers, no fee for shooting the target hanger (PGC charges 25$) and it has infinitely better lighting.

You're also right by it if you're in 089. Just hang a left on highway 3 and take it down to pasadena. It's a little off the road right behind a car dealership, there's a big orange sign with big letters "XTC" that'll let you know you're there.

Marksman used to not allow magnum rounds as well. That was a few years ago though. I used to use that range quite a lot when I lived in that area. It was nice enough and they didn't bother me at all. I liked the fact that I could bring in several pistols if I wanted and there was no time limit. It was only $7 a shooter at that time. I bet they would allow .22 rifles, but I would call and ask first.

I have never shot at Bailey's, but they have reasonable prices on powder and primers so I swing by occasionally.

Back when I got my CHL originally, we did our qualification at an indoor range off Friendswood road (2351) a mile or so South of I-45. I think it was before you get to that high school. Anyway, I don't see if come up on searches so I don't know if it is open anymore.

Bailey's is a pay per gun range. You can shoot pistol, rifle or shotgun there. They do make you shoot single shot on the rifle range.

What are you shooting and how far are you willing to travel? I usually travel about 44 miles to my gun club, NW of Houston. Looks like it's about 60 miles from where you'll be, but if you're willing to travel you can come to the ImpactZone with me this weeks end if you're still around.

Also, find someone with a PSC or Bayou Rifles membership and get an invite to go out there. I think that they're both near Pearland.

+1 to that...

This place is nearby and has a nice outdoor facility. No ammo sales, can't remember if they had targets. Cash only too iirc.

Freedom to practice

I have an AR-15 and several pistols. I have been shooting at ASC for many years now. Its a good range, but I would like to shoot at a range that will allow the following:

1) Allow me to practice drawing from the holster. I hold a CHL and would like to practice drawing from my holster.
2) Allow me to setup my own targets to practice tactical pistol shooting. Multiple targets and moving targets would be great.
3) Allow me to practice tactical shooting with my AR-15. Things such as shooting on the move is a skill that I need to practice.

I watch a lot of firearms training video and would like to have a place to practice these concepts. I've looked all over the place but could not find such a place (public or private). Is buying my own land the only way to do this? It seems everyone has a range rule that prevents drawing from holster.
I would appreciate any advice and/or recommendation. I especially like to hear from Bayou Rifles members.

Thanks,
Kevin

Sounds like you need to buy some land!

And baileys sucks. Don't waste your time.(rifles anyways)

+1 for Top Gun and American Shooting

Just FYI, if you're interested in purchasing some (or at least looking at) very nice firearms, stop by Collector's Firearms (www.collectorsfirearms.com).

Sadly, not a gun range, but they have an excellent, if not moderately to high priced, selection of everything. Everything from antiques to modern to custom to strange. Generally nice and helpful people so long as you aren't an ass.
