As you can see, I've got a nickel S&W w/square butt checkered grips. In my area, it's kind of hard to find nice replacement grips (wooden/square butt), so I was wondering if there's anything aside from the regular buffing that I could do to improve the 'luster' of em there??
There are several shops which sell very nice Smith wooden grips. I have bought from Ajax and Eagle for mine. Both places will also sell you S&W medallions inlet into the grips which look even better than plain. Ajax makes a very nice set of laminated wooden grips...several flavors...of which I bought a set of "Cherrywood" comapct style with inserts for my 696. Sharp!
Story is alcholic owner would pawn several firearms at the end of each month to tide him over until his retirement check came in. Usually he would re-claim all of them when he got his check.
For some reason he just didn't reclaim this sweet old 49, and I scarfed it up. But then I "scarf up" old snubby's every chance I get.
What an awesome collection of truly fine Smith's. I have an early model 29 in nickel, pinned & recessed, and my trusty, slick, crisp, tackdriving model 586 in nickel with a 6" barrel.
However, I must "bow" before you, Oh great one of many nice nickels
Hello schmeky
Thanks for the Kind words. I have been a Nickel Finish Revolver Lover for Years, and only collect S&W revolver's. I also have some fine Blued models of their's as well. Take care, Hammerdown
Hello Huskerz85
I did notice one small problem. The sideplate screw showing just in front of the left grip is in the WRONG Location. The flat faced screw belongs upper left corner of the sideplate UNDER the grip. If you check by taking off your grips, you will see the screw in the upper left corner "NOW" is a domed screw that belongs where the one is showing that is a flat faced screw. Just a Thought, and an easy fix.... Hammerdown
Hammerdown- Nice 57 but 1980 wouldn't be early for a model that was made 1964-1981. That date would actually be near the end of the run for that model.
Hello
Uhh.. Not Quite.. The Model 57 was first released in 1964. It Became a Dash One series in 1982, a dash Two series in 1988 and lastly a dash Three series in 1990. They continued to make the model 57 Until 1993 when it was discontinued, and Mine is a NO Dash series and I consider it an early one since the production span was 29 Years total on this model and being a No Dash series It was made in the Middle of this models life span.. The 4" barrel and Nickel are also the hardest to find and this one is original, righ down to it's grips, which were removed for this picture and replaced with a set of original 1964 Cokes that came on another model 57. Here is the original grips on the gun, & a picture of it's original Presentation case it came in.. since we are splitting hairs on this model as well.. Hammerdown
BluesBear I have to tell you that nickel/blue is one nice looking Smith. I've never owned one like that, but our rangemaster had a Security Six which was chrome and blue. He called it "Old Floyd", but the Chief called it a "Dominecker Chicken".
