Going through all these threads on shotguns (especially pump action) on GT, TFL and now THR I notice there is little said about the marine magnums. Makes me think marine magnums are ophans not many people are interested in. Or I may be thinking wrong. What are your experiences or knowledge of the marine magnums? Are they LE/Military only or overkill for us civilians? An enquiring mind wants to know!

Rem 870
The Rem 870 is the only one I know of--
Originally available only in a satin nickel finish--It's a 20in 7 shot extended magazine Police Model--
Not really a big deal--very pretty go for $300 to $400 depending on if new or used _(at least around Illinois)--
Now it is also available in a Black--rust resistant finish as well as the Satin Nickel--
They are for sale to civilians-- anybody who can legally buy a scatter gun--

They are very popular up here in Alaska in nickel versions because of the corrosion resistence. I dont like them myself because of the longer barrel and long mag tube which makes them a pain in the neck to cart around.

Marine Magnum...870
I've had one for six years and it is as good as new. I use it on my sailboat and never had any problem with rusting. Also a great home protection gun since it is shorter than a standard 870. darn good looking too.

I brought my Remington Marine Mag. used back in 1994. It was LNIB,and still has the warrantity card with it. The guy who purchased it put a pistol grip on it fired it with full power buck shot, and could not handle it. So it found it's way back to the dealer who sold it. I have replaced the Remington stock with a Speed Feed stock. It's a fine gun.

Yhey're 870s that are rust resistant. Eons from now Archaelogists from another species may dig one out of a dump,hose it off, spray it with lube, make some ammo that fits and go kill dinner with it.

Like everyone else said, Remington makes one but so does Mossberg. I have a Rem 870 HD and the crappy finish they put on it is the farthest thing from rust resistant!
I have found a light coating of rust on the gun after shooting it for extended periods. What is weird is I keep all my guns cleaned and oiled. I think the heat from skeet shooting with it makes the oil dissapate or something.
I live in IN. so a rust resistant finish makes sense and would be usefull. I just can't see spending 50% for it.
There was one in the local paper for $100.00 but I didn't even call on it! :banghead:

My brother had a 590 which was a full tilt milspec, bayo lug, heat shield, GhostRings, but it was ALL stainless. He spent a week polishing that thing with Mothers and what started out as a matte finish wound up being the slickest piece of deer scaring, light reflecting neon I ever saw.
Needless to say, he sold it like a fool and so I felt the need to go get one myself. Too bad. The finish on Mossys had totally changed. No way to polish it out, no bayo lug, no heat shield. Are the new Mossys just coated like the Rems? And has anyone ever run across one of these 590 stainless with a bayonet lug on it?

The Remington MM's were the last of the hand-finished 870's. Supposedly hand-picked and "tuned" prior to coating. That was "almost" worth the extra money. I'm not too sure about the quality of them now.
I have not seen MM's with 20" barrel's as EJ said though. Every one I've seen has an 18" and a +2 extension. I do have a MM +3 extension kicking around the parts box but I never saw the 870 it came from but I assume that it must have been a 20"er.
The finish is nickle, NOT STAINLESS.
I like 'em but I'm not too sure about the fifty percent increase in price.
I might look at sending a nice used 870 to Robar or some such place for a nice finish.
Mossy makes a Mariner that looks like a pimp gun but holds up OK to the harsh environment.

According to the current price list online, only the 20" 590A1 has the accessory lug. The Marinecote finish is only on the 18.5" 590A1 Mariner (catalog #51273). There's also a 590 Mariner in both 18.5" (50273) and 20" (50299). None of the mariners have the Ghost Ring.

Yep. this was probably ten years ago that he had the thing. Shortly thereafter there was nothing like it available. Oddly enough I think it had the wood furniture like the line thrower still listed...Couldn't have been one of those, though, could it? The barrel and the end cap are different on those, I think.

I really like the Rem. Marine Magnum 870. Someday I'll get one, but I have a lot of other stuff I "need" first.

I've had my Remmy MM 870 for ~15 years, never had a problem with it. Forestock has some scratches, permanent scorch mark under barrel on ext-mag, but that's about all the wear it has.

Winchester used to make that 1300 with a stainless receiver(nickle plated?). Had one of those, too. *sigh* I've had a lot of good stuff. *kicks self in arse*

Have had my 870MM for seven years. Have greased it maybe 5 times total. Looks great, works great.

My wife wants the Marine Magnum because she likes how it looks but doesn't want to pay $300+ for it. So she is getting a nickel finish Charles Daly that looks very similar.

After I get done paying off our Easter Weekend cruise to the Bahamas and Speedweek tickets I plan to track myself down a 870 Marine Magnum. Read on another reply about a 590 with a heatshield being fulltilt milspec, however the only REAL milspec 590's didn't have a hetshield they come with a heavier barrel. I have a 590 Security model with heatshield and all and it's a great gun. But I love all the 870's & 590's

Ten years ago I don't think any of the 590's had the heavier barrell so at the time it had everything. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on when the heavy barrels were introduced.
