Been out the bolt action game for about 10 years.

These stocks effective on bolt action rifles?

pros/cons?

Not looking to replace any stocks. Just curious about these and if they work or are gimmicks.

Recoil really doesn't bother me, but less is always better.

I've not used one, but this is my SWAG. The ones I've handled were quite a bit heavier than a standard stock. Haven't put one on any scales so I could be wrong. Heavier guns will recoil less. My guess is that the added weight does more than anything else.

I do have experience with the Benelli Nova mercury tubes that they claim reduces recoil. The mercury tube adds an extra 1/2 lb and the mounting bracket that goes inside the stock is another 1/4 lb. Add 3/4 lb to any gun and it will recoil quite a bit less.

I know one thing . Today with bullet designs out there I woud buy a easy to fire 260 cartidge to hunt with. It is solid to 400 yards on anything my 7RM will do and not beat on me doing it. Well that and a Lamb-saver recoil pad.

I find that if you put a quality shotgun size ( 1" wide and 2" thick) recoil pad like a LimbSaver on a stock that is the correct length of pull for you recoil should be a non issue.

If recoil is still an issue, then you can explore adding a brake of some kind.

Changing to a caliber such as .260 Remington or a 7mm/08 will reduce recoil still more while still allowing you to kill anything in the lower 48 out to 400 yd.

Most mechanical recoil absorbing systems with springs and or mercury buffers add too much weight to carry around comfortably and also change the balance of the rifle.
