How ingrained is hunting and the outdoors in your brain? I ask this because today I was driving past a group of tiny little buildings that had a sign stating "Sheds For Sale".

My immediate thought was "Cool! Maybe I can pick up a few and make a lamp like they've got in the Cabela's catalog." :scrutiny: It took me almost a full minute (during which I had almost completed my plans for the lamp) before I realized what they were really selling.

In response to my own question... I must have it pretty bad. :) :D

Trapper,

They have been building a new bldg on my College Campus. All this time others have been "seeing" Contractor Bldgs , 4WD trucks, Port-a-Potty's, all sorts of conduit, PVC , Ladders...

I'm seeing hunting huts/cabins, how to get "back into the woods" vehicles, bathrooms, good stuff to make the hut/ cabin better, deer stands...

I wonder what the Regs are on using a Bucket on a Utilty truck? Sure would alleviate worry about having to lug a deer stand out, much less leaving one out and fear of getting stolen. :)

All this time I have been able to see the progress vias web cam...talk about being stealthy in scouting areas...
*smirk*

Should have seen the grins when I mentioned that last one to some of my IT instructors...DoIP [deer over internet protocol]

Trail timers are so old fashioned...:D

How bad do I have it???

It's spring time and the other day as I was out on the baseball field helping some kids with some practice, I looked to the east. The Cascade foothills are just about in the back yard. I noticed that the snows are melting down low. There must be several new fawns, young bucks grouped together, many with nubbins where antlers shall soon grow. The bears are soon to emerge. As the snow level rises in the next couple of months I hope to get up to the high country. Ride the motorcycle as far as I can get, then snow shoe up to Twin Lakes and Mount Winchester. I'm sure to see something foraging for food along the way. The only thing open for me is Coyotes. I'll certainly take a shot or two. But baseball season is in full swing. LittleLeague and PonyLeague for my two boys. As I drifted back to reality, none fast enough -I might add, I was awaken by a thud as a baseball hit my hip.

I must really pay more attention when out on the field. But the mountains are calling. They are an addictive sight, plunging one into a euphoria if we're not careful. T'is a drug that is healthy. Very healthy. Unless you're standing in the field with a bunch of youth baseball players...:D

So bad that I am locked on to the Outdoor channel just about every day that I'm in front of the tube.

My next hunt is in just under 4 weeks when turkey season comes in. Can't wait to get up into the mountains:D

Although I rarely seem to get the chance to go bird hunting, I still shoot about half of my skeet rounds low gun using my pump field gun. Just imagine the sound of a pheasant cackling as it takes off. Makes me yearn for the area in which I grew up.

Bad enough that I've already cleaned my deer rifle within an inch of its life, and I've already had to replace one (riddled and destroyed) bale of hay that I was using as an archery target.

I may need professional help.....dog found a dead 13pt buck carcass, sawed off the rotting smelly head and hung it on a tree in hopes the bugs will make a European mount for me. (Why did I do this?.....I would never stop and pick up road kill.)

Steve - I've seen a modified scissors-lift (just like the construction guys use), all done up with a camo net around the platform. The idea is to tow it near your stand location, "drive it" exactly where you want it to go, hop in and raise it to the appropriate shooting height.

It's not my idea of an ideal setup, but could certainly keep some older or disabled hunters in the field.

Well now that depends on who you ask.

I think I am fairly normal. Hunt when I can and such.

Wife thinks that I am obsessed and that all I think about is when the next time I am going hunting.

Me ? I'm passed redemption ! I shoot /Hunt for a living & have done all of my working life with the exception of being a Guest of the Aust Army for 6yrs:barf: ! So I suppose it must be getting close to 40 years now that this has been my sole form of income ,from Rabbits to Water Buff ! I live on the Family Farm of about 20'000 acres But have never been a farmer ! I have lived most of my life sleeping outdoors & cooking over a open fire ! It's not a life that I suggest is for everyone & I discourage new Blokes from traveling down the same path !
Now on saying this I have 3 step kids who were born & bred in a majoor city & had never been out bush until they & their mother moved in with me ! Now I sometimes wonder if I was the one born in the city & they have lived their whole lives out here !:what:

The Photo is of me & the Lad & his shooting car ! His 12 & takes great delight in driving round & spotlighting & giving the Crows around here hell to say nothing of Goats ,rabbits ,foxes ! .....Yeah I think his got the bug :D

"The Photo is of me & the Lad & his shooting car ! "

Shooting car? Those of us in the civilized world... Might think that'd be a bit dangerous. Teach him to be safe, will ya. Sorta brings visions of Mad Max movie clips. ;)

And is that a PISTOL I see you with? I thought those were outlaw'd down under.

I am not having hunting dreams, waking up all charged at 3 am.
Why, I haven't even been browsing hunting forums and looking at others tropheys and takes, just because their season happens to start about a month before it does up here.
Season opener doesn't start in about two weeks up here either. :scrutiny:

Trapper, I've been shed hunting since winter. See my thread in this section.
Anyway I was in my back yard the other day just looking around and saw what I actually thought was an antler. As I started walking to it, it dawned on me that I live in a city of 100,000+ and there hasn't been a deer within a mile in 20+ years. My yard is completly fenced in also. It turns out the "antler" was actually a broccoli stalk I pulled out of the garden last year.:what:

As I sit here at work polishing off some leftover Chinese takeout, I kept thinking while eating that this would have been sooooo much better with deer meat. I'm thinking a diced up chunk of whitetail loin.

PCGS65 - You might be surprised about the deer proximity. In 2001 I was heading downtown in the wee morning hours to run the Chicago Marathon, and before I could get onto the Stephenson Expressway, I passed a doe running right down the middle of Joliet Road (within about 1/2 mile of where I-294 and I-55 cross). There are some woods around, but almost everything right nearby is very heavily developed.

Plus, when I lived in Grand Rapids, every once in a while you'd see deer roadkill on the downtown highways... quite a ways from any "normal" deer cover.

I have been hunting one thing or another since I was age 7 with my Benjamin and got a .22 at age 9 and also first dove hunt, first deer age 11, first duck hunt age 14. At age 53 I ain't cured of it, put it that way. :D I still get excited with the first cool front of fall and the first geese I hear/see. It never ends, only gets better.

:D Steve you would be amazed at the things that we used to drive as kids on the Farm (Brakes were optional ) No the Young fella is a great driver & the Shooting bus doubles for all sorts of Farm work! His been Driving since he was 9yrs Old & is a fair opperator of a Tractor ,Grader & Front end loader ! We don't have passengers round here. It's a common misconception about the Rifle ,Shot Gun & handgun laws down here ! Yes there were restrictions & buy backs & it became harder for the Sportng shooter to own semi autos & Hand guns ...But The Gov is a little backward & shy of propery owners & Pro shooters & the laws did'nt affect us at all:) On the handgun side of things they limited cal size Barrel lenght ,& Mag capasity .There were exceptions made for Metalic sil & Western action ! Handguns have always been banned for hunting apart from use by Primary producers (Funny how I all of a sudden took a intrest in the Farm ) Needless to say the handgun I'm holding is a Ruger SBH in .44mag (1 of a pair ) & the Lad has his single 6 ! I love the expresstion on a cops face when they find me carring a hand gun at work & then find I'm licenced to use it for work! Our local cop takes great delight of finding anti gun cops (as he is very pro gun & spends a lot of time out with me ) & sending them out to where I'm working telling them there has been a complaint about someone hunting with a hand gun :what: f course this is time out that costs me time & money so I return the favor by complaining to the Commisioner of Police & the minister of the fact that the Cp in question should learn to do a back ground check before making a Fool of him self :neener: This causes the said cop to really think about his actions when dealing with shooters ,as sometimes they bite!

Dave

Yes Trapper, I believe that some deer get "pushed" out of their habitat when developers are taking their land. They get spooked so bad they become disoriented and end up running into urban areas which make them more spooked.
