I want to purchase a Colt Sporter online, and its a Colt Sporter Match HBAR, but my question is how can I tell/make sure that it is in fact a Pre-Ban rifle? I live in NY where the AWB is still in place so it is important for me to make sure this rifle is legal before I go ahead and purchase it. I have the serial number, but I don't know of any database or search site where I can check to make sure it is a Pre-Ban rifle. If you guys have any advice or could point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Can you go by the features??

For instance, a pre-ban will have a flash-hider, bayo lug, detachable mag, pistol grip. while a BAN era gun will NOT have the flash-hider or bayo-lug.

Or does NY require you to go by the manufactire date??

By the manufacture date, all those accessories are illegal in New York unless the gun was manufactured prior to Sep. 1, 1994 I believe. I'm just trying to find out how I can figure out if the rifle I want to purchase is actually a Pre-Ban(which means manufactured before the previously mentioned date) model.

Manufacturer date..The pre bans had flash hider and bayonet lugs..The post bans often had the flash hiders removed and the bayonet lugs ground off..Here is a post ban but being a LE model has all the above still attached.I am not sure Colt has re added the Bayonet lugs since the ban was lifted ?They provided these for Law Enforcement and military sales only at the time..

By the serial number.
After the Klintoon ban died in '04, several manufacturers went back to buisiness as usual.
Flash hiders, lugs,etc.

Ask your local toy dealer to look up the s/n's of pre and post ban sporters, the letter prefix in the s/n will let you know.
