I made my OAL guage, using a bullet pushed into the case by the rifling, and it measured in at 3.101", but the OAL recommended in the Hodgdon manual says to use a OAL of 3.100". Is this too close to the lands? Will this cause issue being that close?

Use a bullet comparator to get your OAL, as very few bullets, match encluded are exactly the same length, giving you false readings.

This is one reason there meplat trimmers.

As far as your question, is it to close? I seat my rounds for my Rem. 700VLS, 2/3 thousands short of the lands, that where I get my best accuracy with my load and barrel.

So, maybe seat them one or two thou shorter and I should be in the clear?

When I measured a box of 40 I made, they all pretty much were 3.100".

Hornady or any of the other reloading manuals don't SAY to use a particular OAL, they simply list the OAL that they used for their load development.

When you open the bolt and the bullet stays in the throat but the case comes out, that is too deep.

Happened to a bud of mine last week. He was shooting in a 1000 yard match, I was pulling his target. In the middle of the string he pulls the trigger and nothing happens. He ejects the round but the bullet is lodged in the throat. It took him almost ten minutes to find a cleaning rod, knock the bullet out, clear the receiver recesses of powder, and get going again.

That ate up most of his shooting time.

Probably played havoc with his concentration as well.;) A couple of years ago, I was spotting for a guy that in the middle of a relay, his extractor broke (Remington 40X). He shot the rest of the relay shoving my cleaning rod down the barrel to "extract" his fired cases.

What is "pretty much"?
"pretty much" is within a thou either direction. I can't state specifically as they have already been shot, but I am just wanting to make sure whether I should load at that depth any more, or if it will pose a danger to me or someone else.
