I love in Seattle, and would love to learn some venues for hunting small varmint such as squirrels, prairie dogs and so on with my (soon-to-be) .17.

Does anyone have any suggestions for specific places within a few hours drive, or ways to locate such a place?

Thanks in advance.

Go in person and speak to someone at the fish and game dept. find a local gun shop that has friendly hunters, ask questions as you learn more ask more.

Eastern Wa.has ground squirrels, you might find area's to shoot the larger ground squirrels south along the Columbia River from the central area an east.

As far as I know the closest "prairie dogs" are east of the Continental divide much farther east than Idaho, hundreds of miles from you.

SE Oregon for ground squirrels in significant numbers. Montana around the middle of the state for dogs (I used to hunt them years ago on public ground near Livingston, but have no clue if there are still dog towns in the area). Some sage rats around eastern Washington, but land access opportunities are getting fewer & farther between. Petition to get the state to open season on sea lions . . . as much as I dislike big cities, I'd even Jeep west for that! Or, buy an air rifle, find a good location & hunt wharf rats. When I lived on the edge of Bremerton, this was a great & beneficial pastime. Good luck . . .
