How comfortable are folding stocks on rifles such as AKs? Is there a noticable effect on accuracy? Thanks!

There are three styles of AK folding stocks that I've had experience with. There's the Russian wire stock that underfolds. This is hideously uncomfortable to me. There's also the Poly-tech wire-framed side-folder with a plastic insert. That's not so bad. The Modern Russian side-folder is much more comfortable, but I don't like a metal cheek-weld myself.

Accuracy... no difference on the AK. The main difference is ergonomic. You can't get a good cheek weld on the underfold style and that does effect accuracy for me, but we're not talking any MECHANICAL difference in accuracy potential. If you want an accurate gun, get a fixed stock and a gun OTHER Than the AK.

I can't stand the folding stocks on guns like M1 Carbines and Calico carbines. Talk about crappy cheek welds...blech. I haven't used a folding stock AK, but I expect they would be the same. On the other hand, the FNC, Daewoo K2, and probably a few others have a folding "full" stock, which works great.

A lot depends on the type of folding stock. The Russian fixed type folder looks to be just that, a fixed stock that folds, and boy howdy would I like to get one! :) As for the "a gun other than the AK" comment, my Krebs AK103K(with a 14" barrel) routinely out shoots my Bushmaster AR Dissapator at 100 yards, and thats stock, open sights on both. The AKs aint target rifles, (then again, either is my Bushmaster :) ) but they will get the job done if "you" can shoot. :)

That style of AK folder looks to be the bees knees. I wonder what the State Dept would have to say about importation...

I have a Norinco underfolder which looks cool but is uncomfortable to use. I have a Valmet side folder, it looks cool to but is still uncomfortable to use. I'v used several Car-15's and they are no better. An AR180 with a side folding stock was by far and away the best as far as comfort and cheek weld.

Generally, not very.

The underfolder on my Polytech AK is not very comfortable to use. The stainless sidefolder on my Mini-14 on the other hand is very nice. Don't really like the folder on the Uzi, but the retractable stocks on HKs and M16s are great.
