I bought a used (private sale) Maverick 88, 6 shot 12 ga the other day. It came with an 18.5" and 30" or so barrel. The finish is well worn off in some spots/splaches on the barrels, noticeably so. Paid $200 for it. I just saw it and jumped on it. What do you think, was that toooo much?

A bit more than I would want to pay as the finish issues you mentioned.
But since it came with two barrels that certainly makes it easier to justify.
I bought a 28" barrel Maverick in 2002 new for $139.00.
You did alright if the shotgun is fully functional.

Close quatin, but my inflation calculator says 139.00 in 02 would be 168.00 today.
Athough in reality a new one is generally $200.00 today.

That was nearly a decado ago. I bought a Mossberg Persuader back then for $180. They sell for almost twice that now.

I can't see your gun, but the Maverick I looked at, over the weekend, was fully the equal to any Mossberg shotgun I've ever seen. I have had nothing but solid reliability and fantastic value from Mossberg. A buck fifty for a working riot gun + 50 for a sporting barrel sounds pretty hard to beat. Do they have any others?:)

Hmmm...so it doesn't seem like a "steal" or a "loss". I wonder what the best way is to reblue this. Me thinks the reblue pens at the Sportco will leave an uneven finish that looks just as weird as the blemishes.

There is always some pretty fair deals on used Mavericks over at GunBroker.

Last I only mentioned the purchase price of mine as a scale.
As I said most new Mavericks go for around $200.00 and you can catch them on sale for less.
Still with two barrels you did okay.

Perhaps high-temp spray paint would be better than trying to patch up missing bluing.

Aww schucks, thanks. This was a private sale. :)

If it was a private face to face then all the better!
No shipping charge, tax, or FFL fee.
That alone saved you at a bare minimum at least $50.00 and probably more to the tune of $75.00.

So it looks like it was a good deal after all! I did some research and it looks like Krylon spray paint will do a good job of making it tacticool.

Well that sounds good to me. Last year it took me months to find a used gun under $300. Having 2 barrels is also nice.

are you talking about wear marks from like a gun rack? Stray scratches on the receiver? If its normal wear and tear, I don't even notice on using guns.
2 of my favorites have no bluing left. And I enjoy them a little more knowing,I wont make them any worse. 2 weeks ago my daughter dropped a Ruger Single Six out of a pistol rug that wasn't zipped up all the way.It was at the club and she was mortified. You should have seen the look on her face. It got 1 little mashed, burr spot on the alum. grip., I told her not to worry, when we look at it, we can remember a perfect day at the range.

Found a wood stocked Rem 870 Express 20 gauge I thought about getting, but I really don't need it, 200 bucks and looks near new. Don't care much for 870s, anyway, the ergos, I'm a lefty. I like the Mossies and Browning BPS.

Two barrels on that Maverick is good, but I think ya spent a little more than I would. Still, if it shoots well and makes you happy, 200 ain't squat for a good shotgun. :D

A lot of people neglect to factor these things in. Just considering tax alone, paying $200 ftf is the same as paying about $185 in a retail shop. Some folks think that if they didn't get the lowest possible price, they didn't get a good deal. I used to think that way, until a bought "great deal" guns that didn't work so hot.

Now I think the good deal is paying a fair price and getting something that works well. A higher price is no guarantee you've got a good gun, but a low price is no guarantee you've got a good deal (if the thing needs to be fixed.)

Imo you paid too much. I say this because Walmart sells the Mavericks brand new for $188. That being said, you did get an extra barrel, but it sounds like they are both pretty well worn. IMO I'd have just bought a new one instead of a worn one. I don't think you got totally ripped off, but I don't think you did that great either.
