How did you solve your "slippery" buttstocks on your Surplus rifle?

I have several military surplus rifles that I enjoy to shoot but the one thing I don't like about how they handle is the slippery metal buttstocks. To me it always feels like the rifle is moving around on my shoulder too much. I don't really need anything for recoil reduction and I prefer not to add to the length of the stock too much. I thought of using skateboard tape or something like that but I thought I would ask you guys if you have come up with any more creative solutions. Pics or links would be great if you have them. Thanks.

BTW, I know a lot of guys don't use anything and you are just fine that way. Thanks.

In the past i have used a plastic dip. The kind used for tool handles. Just remove the metal buttplate. Paint the buttplate with the plastic dip. Let dry and re-install. Will only add a bare minimum of length say 1/16th or so. Plus you can always remove it if need be.

Get a Past recoil shield. It is about 1/2 thick and will help keep the rifle nailed to your sholder and give you quite a bit of reduction in felt recoil whether you need it or not. You can wear it under your shirt if you think your shootin' buddies might call you a wussie.

Grip tape from Ace hardware works perfectly fine.

It will wear, so be prepared to spend another $1.50 in a few years.

+1 on the grip tape. Ace has two kinds, a black one that is like skate board tape (I have cut out patterns and put them on the forearm and grip of my 10/22 and mini 14) and a gray one (rubber) that will add no length but should hold up very well. I heat mine up with a hair dryer, so it will conform to the shape better, before I apply it

Use your butt plate as a pattern then cut, peel and stick. If you find that it's not for you, heat it with the hair dryer and remove.

have any of you tried the spray-on plasti-dip or a similar product?
The rattle can Plasti-Dip is horrible. You can't get a decent coat with it...it's neither flat, nor evenly textured, it just looks shoddy IMO. OTOH, the spray applied bed-liner (as mentioned above) or undercoating should coat fairly evenly and give a bit of texture whilst holding up reasonably well (once you get over the smell).

:)

Skateboard tape?

I have heard people have used skateboard tape to improve grip. I don't know if it is what you are looking for.

Ive used something similar to skateboard tape, thats probably the easiest cheapest way to remedy the issue lol. My most recent "fix" was to make a recoil pad out of a slipper. Just glued it to the stock on my Nagant, soaks up some of the recoil and made it long enough for me to shoot comfortably. If your trying to keep your rifle short, then that might not be the best fix for you lol. Also, i dont know what your slipper supply is like where you live, here in hawaii waly world caries more slippers then shoes.

You could also use some thin "upholstery leather"...just glue it on (Gorilla glue?) with the suede side out and it should give the desired purchase to stay in the pocket.

:)

I just slapped my forehead about three times.

Rhino liner is a great idea.

I buy thin suede I use to line the back of my holsters.

Both of those things I should have thought of myself. See? This is why I asked.

I stopped by ACE today and they had some rubbery no-slip take that was CLEAR. I'm going to try that on my K31. A buddy of mine has some rhino liner. I'm going to ask him if I can have some for the buttstock of my AK. I don't mind if it is semi-permanent on the AK or even my K31 but I think I'll use the clear stuff on my Steyr M95. I'll let you know how it turns out and I'll post some pics if I can make it look decent.

Thanks a LOT.

Slip-over rubber recoil pad?

I usually wear a coat of some kind when shooting a high powered rifle, and I use a PAST shield when I'm going to shoot a lot. Those slip-overs don't fit a 98k.

I have the slip over recoil pad and I use it occasionally but I really prefer the fit of my K31 and my Steyr without it. It does do a great job though. I installed the aftermarket rubber butt pad made for the Mosins on my M44. It works great too.

I just put some of the rubberized no-slip on my K31. Its clear so it really doesn't detract from the look of the rifle but it doesn't give quite the traction I hoped. Its better than without it though. I'll try some of the grippier black stuff next.

Or just hold tighter?
The majority of my shooting over the years has been in milsurps and I've never had a problem.
Then again, I hate how rubberized and whatnot buttplates/pads grip clothing (even though that's what they're supposed to do).

To each his own I guess but my bit is that it's pretty easy to get used to.

FLoat Pilot, I get what you are saying but I'm trying to do something reversible there is no "bubba effect" in my book.

You know they make shooting jackets with non-slip textured shoulder area, thus avoiding the bubba effect to your rifle.
A brass or steel buttplate can easily be rid of any residual glue/adhesive/spray-applied material with a SS scrubber pad or some rough steel wool...so it's not really a "bubba" IMO.

:)

None of mine are slippery......How are you holding your rifle? Many millions of soldiers couldn't be wrong......chris3

I'm holding my rifle like anyone else does. I simply prefer the stock to fit securely into my shoulder without having to "muscle" it there. The second part of your statement is just silly. "Many millions of soldiers" didn't design and set up their duty weapons. Not the mention the fact a steel buttplate is more durable and appropriate on a weapon for war than a rubber one. You could even argue the tens of millions of other rifles made with textured or rubberized butt pads far outweighs your argument. There aren't many, if any, modern military rifles made today that have a smooth steel buttplate. Besides, its just a preference and since I've gotten quite a few replies I would say some others feel that way also. You don't, good for you.
