How do I buy a gun?

"Here in town it is $15.00 plus ammo. Seems silly to me but they don't let you run your own ammo through their guns."

Would you want some yahoo testing his hot reloads in one of YOUR guns?

Find a gun shop with attached range that rents guns/offers safety classes. Call and talk to them. If you don't feel comfortable with the way they talk to you call another. (I am sorry to say some gun store/range owners are thoughtless/crass/sexist idiots) :( :(
I would suggest a .22LR in either a semi auto or revolver. It is cheap to shoot. (most expensive I have seen is 500rds for $25) which (IMO) is crazy.
The norm now is 9mm 50 rds practice ammo @ $12 and up. So you can shoot (at least) 5x as much for same money. Plus less recoil (which really is not bad until you get to .357mag or larger) and not as loud (still wear hearing protection)
Take a basic firearms safety course. (most you do NOT need a gun to take as they will let you try a variety of guns) (heck of a deal for that alone)

Most rental places are $10 per gun plus ammo (and you must use thier ammo)

How I got my gun was this

1) Went down to my sheriff office were they check my record and did a "small" background check on me. Afterward they gave me my gun permit to buy it. They gave me 10 days to use the permit or it was voided. Cost=$10
2) Went down to my local gun shop and got my gun.
3) At the gun shop, I had to sign more paperwork then when I got my car but one of them was my permit were they put down the serial number, barrel length, caliber, mag size, make, and model
4) Took it back up to the Sheriff's office were they sent the information to the state so it would be on file.

This is what I had to do in my state, your state my vary.

? something doesn't smell right ?

lol, larry, there seems to be some "gun store/range owners" right here.

Oh well, it's paranoia and crap that pales in comparison to what I've gone through this last year.

I just want to own a gun that was stolen from me, and shoot it finally, or maybe possibly shoot a cooler one, though I don't know for sure.

I am tired of being the victim, and if I own a gun, that's a whole lot less likely to happen too.

I'll second the recommendation that you take a class and try lots of different handguns. See larry minn's post #28 above for a good approach to it. :)
