Do you measure it from the outside, installed............Hypothetically it would come up to 17 1/2 " that way...........if it were installed and a dowel rod dropped into the barrel from the muzzle all the way down to the closed bolt face, it is 18 1/8".......Hypothetically, would that be legal?

Inquiring minds want to know.............

Federal agents.

Close the bolt. Drop a dowel down the bore. Mark the dowel, pull it out, and measure.

Chances are, if it's on the shelf in the US and it's that short, it'll be around 18 1/4" or 18 1/2".

Remington's factory 18" barrels are 18 1/8" measured to a closed bolt. It does freak people out sometimes to see one, especially a 12 gauge parkerized one. They really do look short.

If it has Remington's 'bead on a block' front sight, it's likely factory...

Go buy a 50 cent wooden dowel at the crafts store, which is 20 or so inches or more. Drop down muzzle until resting against breech face. Mark dowel. Measure. You want at least 18.10" or even preferably 18.2" to be safe.
