What's the best way to shoot a gun that can not be rented? I don't want to spend $ without firing it first. None of my buddies have the pistol so... I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

If it is a well-known and QUALITY piece, you will LEARN TO LIKE IT!

If you are simply budget-shopping for a $150 semi-auto pistol, then expect nothing but misery.

I didn't know how I would like my S&W 500 with the 4" barrel, but then after I dropped about $1,000 on it and another $1,000 in ammo, reloading dies, brass, bullets, etc. and worked up a load for it and shot it a lot, I absolutely LOVE that gun!

I'm glad I don't have the 8" or 10" longer barrels. The gun is lighter to carry, I can conceal it easily under a coat if I wish and I hunt deer and black bear with it. I dropped $1,000 on the gun that everybody was oooing and ahhhing over in the display case for 10 months, but no one would bring themselves up to buy it. I heard after I bought it that others had stated they wished they had bought it. Hey, there are always more being made every hour!

Remember, you can ALWAYS adjust the load to suit your likes and needs.

How about some specifics? What make and model? Where are you?
Perhaps someone out of the legions of THR members is close to you and might be willing to help or knows where you can go nearby to try the thing (whatever the thing is).

I'm in Tucson, Arizona. I would like to shoot an HK, any HK -- P30, UPS, P2000 etc. Local gun range does not rent HK's for some reason.

It sounds reasonable to me.

HK pistols are expensive, and James39 wants to see if he likes it before he buys.

It's something I recommend to everyone inquiring about what gun might be best for them.

That being said, I'm not sure how to help in this case.

In the end, your options are:

1) Go somewhere that has what you want to shoot, and shoot it there

2) Find someone locally who has what you want, and ask them if you can shoot it

I don't see too many other options, and #2 isn't an especially good one (or, at least, is less likely to produce results in the short term).

Maybe plan a trip to a larger city after calling around to their gun ranges to see what they rent? My friends and I traveled from non gun-friendly NY State to gun-friendly South Carolina for vacation, and one of the things we did while we were there was shoot handguns at a local gun store/range. I got to try out some 22LR firearms that I was thinking about buying. It was a lot of fun, and we all got some useful shooting experience.

(quote) So you just want to shoot something that has HK on the side of it ?

(quote) And so what if he did?

I'm not saying that's a bad thing, HK's are great, just that the OP seems to have no other criteria, and has yet to elaborate any further, despite requests to do so. Does seem a little odd, doesn't it?

Hey James39, try Tucson Rifle Range club, Pima Pistol Club, Marksman Pistol Club, you're either young/inexperienced (I don't mean that in a bad way) or you don't get out much if you say there are no gun clubs in Tucson, look around and you might find someone that will help you out.

My Opinion:
If HK's are still made in Germany, I think if you bought the piece you would be totally satisfied with the quality.

It may be expensive, but it would last more than several lifetimes.

For az shooters, you could go to arizonashooting.com and make a post there. I bet there is someone who would be willing to share.

If not, drive up to Phoenix and try a range up there/here (I am in phoenix). Caswells has HK's for rent (almost positive).

For some reason my login doesn't work anymore and I'm unable to reset the password. Anyways...

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I don't want to rationalize my choice AFTER I buy the gun. That's why I want to try an HK. I learned this lesson with a Sig 229. Excellent gun, precisely engineered etc. etc. and I loved it until I shot one. It just wasn't for me.

tunnug; Hello townie! :) Last time I checked 2 (of 3) of those places did not have HKs for rent.

If this is your first handgun then you should handle (and preferably shoot) every major type of handgun out there to find out what points naturally for you. Don't start with any prejudices, just be sure that you handle the HK, 1911, BHP, Glock, CZ75, etc. platforms so that you can find out what fits your hand instead of someone else's idea of what the ideal handgun is.

I know that 2 of the places don't rent, I should have said look around and start a conversation with people there, I've gotten to shoot peoples guns when I start talking to them about it, most of the time they'll offer you to shoot it, I've offered mine for people to shoot when they've shown interest, of course how they conduct themselves will have an impact on an offer or not, good luck on your search.
