How do you adjust the sights on a CETME?

I just bought a CETME at the gun show today and I can't figure out how to adjust the sights for windage. I figure that I need a special tool to adjust elevation on the front sight, but the back sight looks like it does not move. What's up?


What is the deal with these guns I thought they were suppose to be OK, I took this thing out and it was a jam-o-matic. I think I can solve the problem, a good cleaning might do the trick as the reciever was chuck full of millings. What does everyone think of these rifles?

To adjust the sight you need a Cetme sight tool. Go to www.tapco.com there cheap. You have to loosen the screw at the barrel end of the sight. Then you can turn the sight with the adjusting tool. The Cetme sight is set in an oblong hole, so as you turn the sight you can move the windage. Hope that helps.

As far as the Cetme being reliable. You need to take it apart and clean it throughly. The come full of white grease, which really gums them up.
The other main cause of problems is the trigger group sometimes hangs down a little low, this will cause the rifle to not eject spent cases. Once you get the bugs out, there great shooters.

Darren, I have had a CETME for close to a year and really enjoy it.

Yes, the front sight adjusts for both windage and elevation. Look down at it from the top and you'll see the sight post is offset. It will cover about 4MOA of adjustment (4" at 100 yards) as it goes throgh a complete circle.

The procedure for adjusting the sights is:

1) Adjust for elevation.
2) Turn the post less than one turn one way or the other to adjust windage.

You may find that yor front sight does not adjust enough to get you on target. These rifles were assmbled by Century Arms, and they don't have great quality control. Some were assembled with slightly tilted front sight bases. Mine had this problem. If yours does this, there are a number of options. All have been discussed in detail on the CETME forum, so search that if you need.

My dealer fixed mine by grinding off the front post and putting in a new one (made from drill stock) that is a bit more offset, giving me more adjustment. Works like a champ now.

I have never had a feeding failure that was not magazine related. I tossed the bad mags, and now I never have a misfeed. The rifle is quite accurate and easy to shoot, too. I constently get 2MOA grous with the iron sights, and with Portugese surplus (FNM) ammo.

Thanks for all the info, I might try to make a new front sight as my gun is off to the left about 6" at 50 yards. The cleaning helped the gun more than words can say. Before it jammed every other shot, you name it it did it. Now the gun funtioned close to perfect. A few failures, but I think these were mostly mag related.
