How do you attach your tag to your deer?

I used to use #14 copper wire from a piece of romex--thru the hole in the tag to an antler---would do this back at camp. Always hung the deer where it could be seen---we always had people that liked to hunt for your deer---they were too lazy to shoot their own. When they changed the law that you could not bring any type of weapon into a bar---the criminal had an early Christmas. One year one of the guys tied his dog in the back of his rig--he was afraid dog would scratch the seats---we lost 3 fine hunting rifles to the Christmas shoppers.------------------------:fire::fire::fire:

If we kill a buck we are supposed to record it on our license but I have never been checked by anybody to see if I have.
This was the violation that got the most citations the first year it was implemented. At a gathering spot located among several hunting clubs in Perry County,Alabama (of which I was a member of one) game wardens just sat and waited as hunters arrived to show their success. Hardly anyone had filled out their license resulting in a $200 fine for each violation(the kill must be recorded on the license before moving the animal). It is now illegal to hunt deer without a pen or pencil in your possession.

I didn't say that I don't fill out my harvest record. I do. (BTW, I leave a pen in each of my shooting houses just in case I forget to take one with me when I go hunting.) I just have never been checked in the six years that I have deer hunted in Alabama. Due to the geography of the situation where I hunt, there are two chances that I would ever be checked where I hunt, slim and none. I think I would be more likely to be checked when I take the deer to the processor. As stated above the warden could just sit there and check to see if the hunters have a filled out harvest record on them. I have killed and taken to the processor 13 deer over the past six seasons and never been checked anywhere.

never been checked anywhere.
This is like jury duty. Some folks never get called, some get called a lot. It's also like "Candid Camera"....when you least expect it......

Slit the ear and use a wire tie. I have to fill out my tag before moving the animal as well. Some Wardens will get on you for taking pictures before tagging the animal.

I use a 3/8" drive Black and Decker cordless driver and a 2 1/2 galvanized deck screw. Oh, wait, that's my dentist. :-\

A zip tie works dandy to wrap the tag around an antler or foreleg.

I keep some twisty ties in my hunting vest and usually attach to an antler (or ear if it is a doe). If you drag your deer out, I would suggest you keep an eye on that tag. Where I hunt, there isn't anyone around and I don't even attach the tag until I get to my truck. I don't want to loose it.

Electrical tape to antler or foreleg.

Around here, we cut out a date on our tags. As long as the date is cut out immediately upon kill, the game wardens around here won't cite you unless you actually transport the animal in a vehicle without the tag attached.

YMMV

Anterless, I cut a slit in the ear and zip tie it. On antlered sometimes I used rubber bands around one of the tines.
I always make sure it is on good after almost getting a ticket for not having one on while dragging. I guess the game warden felt bad after seeing how far I had drug the deer and let me off with a warning.

Thought this might be useful as it has not yet been mentioned. A few years ago a friend was hunting a WMA with some buddies. He killed a nice buck, but had to leave the deer in the area for a reason that I can't remember. When he got back with his friends to retrieve the deer it had been taken although he had made his best efforts to hide it. A short time later my friend was at the checking station with a deer one of his friends killed. He saw a guy checking in a deer that looked a lot like the one that he had killed. He pulled the officer working the station over to the side and asked him to check in the deer's mouth where he had placed his kill tag in a ziplock bag. Sure enough his kill tag was in the deer's mouth, he got his deer back and the guy that had tried to check it in got a variety of violations from the game warden. So, if you have to leave your deer unattended for a little while this might be a good way to cover yourself.
