When it comes to precision shooting and tight groups, the common school of thought is that every rifle has a particular load, both in bullet weight, and powder charge, which will attain the highest degree of accuracy.

Exactly how does one go about developing the best load for a particular rifle? Is there a scientific process that is commonly followed? Or is it more like Poke-N-Hope?

I would say that you should state exactly what gun you're using, barrel lenth, twist, etc, then ask here what has worked for others with the same gun. With the field narrowed a bit, THEN start experimenting.

i work up handloads for mine. i don't know if it is a 'scientific' process or not, but it is pretty exacting and is certainly not poke-n-hope.

if you have to use factory loads, just buy a box of each and find what shoots best to the range you want to know about.

Hey JP.. yeah I wasn't sure which section would be better to post in but maybe I'll repost in the handload section.

FWIW.. I did post specifically for my gun a few weeks ago w/ no response. It's a PTR MSG91 and I will be hand loading for it. Chambered in .308, 18" fluted barrel, I don't recall the twist right now but I'll double check.

rl-15, 165 hornadys, winchester cases, and whatever primers you have on hand will be a good starting point...
